1797 S-140 R1 PCGS Genuine XF Details Environmental
Damage
. Rather glossy light olive brown and chocolate, possi-
bly recolored. Covered with uniform very fine roughness but
there is no verdigris. The only marks are a few small nicks at
LIB and a pair of dull scratches between the bases of the D in
UNITED and the adjacent S in STATES. MDS showing minor
swelling at TED and S-OF-A. The date is strong.
Our grade is
VF25 sharpness net VG10.
The attribution is shown on the
PCGS label.

1798 S-144 R5+ Large 8 with Style I Hair G4
. Slightly
sharper but cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy light chocolate
and darker steel brown with traces of reddish tan from the old
cleaning in a couple of the protected areas. No verdigris, only
small contact marks. Most of the contact marks are small rim
nicks, the strongest of these over the E in AMERICA. A dull pin-
prick at the left top of the first S in STATES and another at the
bottom of the I in UNITED can help identify this cent. EDS,
Breen state I, with an obvious dull wave across the reverse from
TA in STATES to the E in AMERICA but no cracks. The date is
complete and clear, and the legends are complete except for
ONE CENT, which is essentially gone thanks to the bulge caused
by the wave across the planchet. Far from perfect but still a
decent low grade example of this rare variety.

338
1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8 with Style I Hair Fair-2
. Sharp-
ness G5, even better in some areas, but the planchet is uneven
and very slightly bent thanks to several dull dents. No corrosion
or verdigris, and the toning is an attractive glossy medium steel
brown and light chocolate. The date is clear. EDS, Breen state I,
before any trace of buckling at S-OF-A.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP
339
1798/7 S-150 R5 Overdate 8 over 7 Fair-2
. Glossy
medium chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, just a few
marks consistent with a heavily worn cent. A short scratch in
the hair under IB in LIBERTY, a dull dent under the hair ribbon,
and some fine hairline scratches on the reverse are the notable
defects. LDS with heavy swelling on the reverse. The date is
strong and the overdate is obvious. In fact the date is the stron-
gest feature showing on this cent, but enough of the reverse
remains visible to be certain of the correct attribution.
Estimated Value .........................................................$60-UP
340
1798/7 S-151 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 AG3+
. Rather glossy
medium brown and light chocolate with darker chocolate brown
toning in protected areas. The devices are mostly smooth while
microscopic granularity covers the protected areas. No verdi-
gris. The only marks are a scuff of faint hairline scratches on the
obverse and a nick or chip over ON in ONE. MDS with swelling
in the obverse fields. The date is clear and the legends are eas-
ily readable, although a few letters are weak.
Estimated Value .........................................................$60-UP
341
1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair PCGS Genuine XF
Details Smoothed
. Lightly cleaned and retoned a rather
glossy olive and dark steel brown with lighter reddish brown
toning in some of the protected areas on the reverse. Nothing
about this cent suggests it was "Smoothed" so I suspect PCGS
meant to say "Cleaning." No marks or other defects, and this
cent offers nice eye appeal. The date is bold and the legends
are complete. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling on the
reverse and a radial die crack from the rim to the upper edge of
the bust.
Our grade is VF20 net F15.
The "1st Hair Style"
feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP
342
1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair VG10
. Five points
sharper but there are traces of hard crud mixed with shallow
verdigris in some of the protected areas on both sides, stron-
gest at ICA in AMERICA. Otherwise just a few light contact
marks, a dull diagonal nick low on the neck the only notable
one. Rather glossy dark olive brown. MDS, Breen state II, with
obvious swelling at ED in UNITED. The date and legends are
bold.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP
