1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded XF40
. Attrac-
tive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter
brown toning in protected areas. There are a few small
areas of slightly darker olive brown toning on both sides,
including one that extends from the second T in STATES
down to the left edge of the fraction. The surfaces are
smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only
notable contact mark is a dull, shallow rim nick over the T
in UNITED. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state II. There is
minor crumbling at the lips and evidence of die clashing on
both sides. Nicely struck, better than most of this variety,
with ONE CENT complete and only minor weakness at OF.
Our grade is VF25.
This piece is a new discovery for the
die variety and it is tied for second finest known honors
with three other pieces in the EAC census (and two of those
are impounded in the ANS Museum). The finest known
grades only VF30. A very important early large cent for the
collector of Sheldon die varieties.
PCGS population 1;
none finer at PCGS for the variety.

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap VG10
. Attractive glossy medium
chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces appear perfectly
smooth but there are a dozen very tiny specks of greenish ver-
digris scattered over the reverse, and all of them are hidden in
the devices so they do not catch your eye. The only defect that
reaches the unaided eye is a light rim bruise left of the middle
curls. The date is bold and the legends are complete and clear.
MDS Breen state II, with obvious crumbling on the lips and a
speck of crumbling under the tip of the nose.

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap VG10
. Glossy steel and reddish
chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive for the grade, only
minor marks and no roughness. The date and legends are
strong except for strike weakness on OF. LDS, Breen state III,
with crumbling at the lips extending to the bottom of the eye.

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap G6
. A couple points sharper but
cleaned and retoning an uneven mix of coppery tan and dark
steel brown. No roughness and the only marks are a couple
barely visible rim bruises at the top and bottom of the obverse.
MDS, Breen state II, with crumbling at the lips but no swelling
in the obverse fields. The date is strong and the legends are
complete except for weakness at OF. Would benefit from a
decent recoloring.
