.
Variety with two leaves following DOLLAR on the edge lettering.
Sharpness VF20 or better but covered with uniform moderate
granularity. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a light
rim bruise opposite the chin and a small chip in the hair left of
the jawline. Slightly glossy medium steel brown and light choco-
late with reddish chocolate brown in protected areas. EDS,
Breen state I, with strong border beads and no die clashmarks.

1793 S-11c R3- Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS
Genuine Devices Engraved
. Variety with a single leaf follow-
ing DOLLAR on the edge lettering. The obverse is glossy light
chocolate brown while the reverse is a darker shade of choco-
late with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. All the devices
on the obverse have been reengraved to strengthen them while
the reverse remains untouched. The obverse offers high-end VF
details thanks to the engraving, but the work does not display a
lot of expertise. The reverse sharpness is near VF20 but there
are areas of pitting on the left side, mostly around UNITED
STATE. It is difficult to settle on a grade for this cent; let's say
F12 sharpness net G5. But it is a genuine Lettered Edge Wreath
Cent with lots of detail.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

1793 S-11 R3 Wreath Cent with Lettered Edge PCGS
Genuine, VG Details Environmental Damage
. Sharpness
G6 or a bit better but there are deep planchet striations cover-
ing most of the obverse and the reverse is moderately rough
from a mix of striations and corrosion. The date is only partially
visible and those parts are faint, but the leaves, portrait, and
LIBERTY remain visible. At least half of the reverse remains vis-
ible as well. Steel and medium chocolate brown mixed with
darker steel on the reverse. Portions of the Lettered Edge are
visible in the slab, but the number of leaves following DOLLAR
can not be determined.
Our grade is G6+ sharpness net
AG3.
The Lettered Edge feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$800-UP

1793 "Smith Counterfeit" F12
. Choice glossy medium
chocolate brown with smooth, defect-free surfaces that
offer excellent eye appeal. This example appears to have
been made from a worn 1793 S-8 cent, but the engraver
was so skilled it is difficult to be certain of the date of the
host coin. At the very least the layout of the designs is close
to those of the S-8 dies (the Crosby 9-G dies), and the edge
has the normal Vine & Bars device found on most Wreath
Cents. Both sides were extensively reworked, not just the
obverse as often found on these pieces. The weight is only
157.1 grains versus the standard of 208.0 which indicates a
significant amount of metal was removed in the engraving
process. This piece is far more attractive than the Smith
Counterfeit in the fabulous Dan Holmes Collection (our sale
9/6/2009:21) that brought $3335.
Estimated Value .............................................. $2,000-UP

Pair of 1793 Electrotype Copies
. Includes an electrotype
copy of a Chain cent that mates the S-3 obverse with the S-1
(Chain AMERI.) reverse grading VG7 and an electrotype copy of
the S-6 Wreath Cent grading VG10. Both are glossy chocolate
brown with a clear date and complete legends. Lot of 2 electro-
type copies.

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge Device of 1794
ANACS graded F12 Details, Corroded
. Dark chocolate and
steel. No marks or verdigris, but the planchet is covered with
uniform moderate granularity. The date is not strong but it is
complete and easily readable. The legends are complete as well
except for weakness along the bottom of the reverse where the
denominator is gone.
Our grade is VG10+ sharpness net
G5.
The attribution is shown on the ANACS label.

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge Device of 1794 PCGS
Genuine, VG Details, Environmental Damage
. Lightly cor-
roded, strongest on the reverse where the roughness obscures
many of the devices. No verdigris or notable contact marks. The
portrait displays the details of a piece grading closer to Fine,
and the date is weak but readable. Dark olive brown and steel
with hints of green patina suggesting this piece was lost in soil
for a while.
Our grade is VG8 sharpness net AG3.
The
"Head or 1793" feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP
