1794 S-47 R4 F12+
. Sharpness VF20 but lightly burnished
and retoned glossy steel and medium chocolate brown. No
roughness or verdigris and only a few contact marks. The nota-
ble ones are a rim bruise under the 9, a tiny rim bruise left of
the lowest curl, and a nick just inside the dentil tips left of the
lowest curl. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. There are light die
clashmarks on the obverse but no die cracks on the reverse.
The date and legends are all strong. Looks nicer than it may
sound.

1794 S-47 R4 F12
. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate
with darker chocolate toning in the most-protected areas. The
highpoints are perfectly smooth while extremely faint granular-
ity covers protected areas. No verdigris or notable marks. A spot
of darker chocolate brown toning near the hair under LI is the
best identifying mark. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. Both
dies are unbroken. The date and legends are complete and
strong. Nice for the grade.

(NGC label #3313110-004 included, and it shows
the attribution).

1794 S-49 R2 NGC graded VF30
. Attractive glossy chocolate
brown and steel blending to dark chocolate in protected areas.
A glass reveals extremely fine roughness in protected areas,
strongest at ED-ST, but overall this cent has excellent eye
appeal. The only mark is a diagonal nick in the field under the
tip of the chin. M-LDS, Breen state II late. A very strong die
crack extends from the rim down through the E in LIBERTY into
the hair below. The obverse is centered on the planchet but the
reverse is slightly misaligned to K-3 causing some weakness on
the tops of AMERICA.
Our grade is F15.
The attribution and
Mervis provenance are shown on the NGC label.

1794 S-51 R4 AG3
. The obverse is better while the reverse is
weaker, which is typical for this variety. Glossy olive brown and
steel. There is a dull dig at the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY and
a few pits on both sides, but there is no verdigris and most of
the planchet is quite smooth. The date is weak but easily read-
able.

1794 S-57 R1 VG10+
. Five points sharper but there are sev-
eral light contact marks around the rims on both sides, and the
rims have been carefully smoothed to minimize their impact.
The smoothing was skillfully done and it takes a glass to detect
the work. The only rim marks remaining visible are a rim nick
over the E in STATES, a rim bruise at S-O, and a few small nicks
on the rim under the fraction. The surfaces are smooth and the
toning is a nice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. E-
MDS, Breen state II, with a couple barely visible waves or
"trenches" in the field before the face and a depression over
ICA in AMERICA. The date is bold and the legends are com-
plete.

1794 S-59 R3 VG10
. Sharpness VF20 but covered with uni-
form fine granularity under mostly glossy chocolate brown ton-
ing. The date and legends are complete and clear. Nicely struck
EDS. This cent offers decent eye appeal in spite of the fine
roughness.

1794 S-60 R3 NCS/NGC VG Details Corroded
. Rotated
Reverse. Slightly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with
lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The surfaces are cov-
ered with fine roughness but no verdigris, and the only mark is
a pit in the field close below the chin. The date is nearly worn
smooth showing only parts of a few numerals, and no more
than half of the legends remain easily readable. What makes
this cent special is the rotated dies. The reverse is rotated 70
degrees CW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation.
While lesser rotations are known for this variety, none of those
is more than 45 degrees.
Our grade is net Fair-2.
The attri-
bution is shown on the NCS label. A piece for the specialist.
