1794 S-19a R5+ Head and Edge Device of 1793 G5
.
Clipped Planchet. Sharpness near VG10 but covered with fine to
moderate granularity. No verdigris and the only mark is a shal-
low pit or chip on the rim left of the cap. In addition there is a
beveled planchet clip affecting the dentils over TED in UNITED.
Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown with slightly lighter
chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. The date and leg-
ends are readable but not strong. The lettered edge device is
complete and strong, including the down-turned leaf following
DOLLAR.

1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793 with Edge Device of 1794
G6
. Very slightly sharper, especially on the reverse, but there
are some old, light scratches hidden in the toning inside the
wreath. Otherwise the planchet is smooth and displays only a
few trivial marks, including a thin planchet lamination from the
rim through the L in LIBERTY to the top of the cap where it
fades away. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel mixed
with some lighter brown toning, mostly on the obverse. LDS,
Breen state II, with obvious swelling in the field under the cap.
The bottom edge of the date is starting to wear into the rim and
a few letters of the legends are weak, but the eye appeal of this
cent is nice for the grade (especially for a Head of 1793).

1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793 with Edge Device of 1794
AG3
. Most of the details are sharper than the assigned grade
but the date is very faint, essentially gone, and OF AMER is
extremely weak. The remainder of the legends are easily read-
able. Rather glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning
on the devices and a splash of rose-brown toning in the date
area. The edge lettering is complete and strong.

1794 S-22 R1 VG10
. Several points sharper but the planchet
is covered with uniform extremely fine roughness and there are
myriad faint hairline scratches covering the reverse, all nicely
hidden in the toning. No verdigris, and the only other mark is a
very light rim bruise over the T in LIBERTY. Slightly glossy dark
olive brown and chocolate with lighter chocolate toning cover-
ing the highpoints. The date and legends are complete and
clear. MDS, Breen state V. There are several shallow "Mounds"
on the reverse, the strongest of these at the top of the wreath,
but no die cracks on the obverse.

1794 S-22 R1 VG7
. Sharpness VG10 or slightly better, espe-
cially on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with micro-
scopic porosity on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No
verdigris and the only marks are a few small, light rim nicks or
bruises on both sides, none significant. Rather glossy dark choc-
olate brown with lighter chocolate toning covering the devices.
E-MDS, Breen state IV, showing a couple minor mounds on the
reverse. The date and legends are complete and easily read-
able.

and verdigris, S-26 R2 LDS VG8 net G4 for light roughness, and

1794 S-27 R5 G6
. A couple points sharper but there are
numerous light scratches on both sides, all blended perfectly
into the rather glossy dark olive and steel toning. The only other
notable marks are a small dig between the tops of the 9 & 4 in
the date and a nick on the lower edge of the jaw over the
throat. MDS, Breen state II, showing delicate but obvious waves
in the field from the chin to the right and from the middle curls
to the rim at left. The date is bold and the legends are complete
except for weakness on the denominator.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,500-UP
