1801 S-216 R1 NGC graded MS62 Brown
. Frosty light
to medium chocolate brown and steel with underlying mint
luster covering both sides. Just the lightest touch of rub is
visible on the highest points of the devices. There is a thin
layer of natural oxidation covering this cent, and it appears
it has never been brushed. The only mark is a faint spot of
slightly darker toning from a dusting of fine carbon in the
field before the neck. M-LDS, Breen state II late. The strike
along the upper edge of LIBERTY is incomplete and the
tops of those letters are missing. Similar weakness shows
along the opposing dentil tips on the bottom of the reverse.
Both dies are obviously well worn and there are die clash-
marks inside the wreath, but the reverse die remains
uncracked.
Our grade is AU55.
The attribution and Mer-
vis provenance are shown on the NGC label.

1801 S-218 R5 3-Error Reverse Fair-2
. A point or two
sharper, especially on the reverse, but the fields and protected
areas are covered with fine roughness, No verdigris, and the
only marks are some faint hairline scratches hidden in the ton-
ing on both sides. Dark chocolate brown with lighter steel
brown toning on the highpoints. The date is weak but still read-
able and at least half of the legends remain visible--but nothing
is strong. The missing left stem on the wreath and blundered U
in UNITED (first inverted, then corrected) are visible, but the
000 error in the denominator is gone. EDS, Breen state I, before
the strong die clashmarks at ERTY.

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse NGC graded XF Details,
Environmental Damage
. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel
with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The sur-
faces are decent and look smooth to the unaided eye, but a
glass reveals minor roughness on both sides. No verdigris but
there are traces of crud in protected areas. The only notable
marks are some nicks around the ear and a few pinpricks on the
neck under the earlobe. MDS, Breen state V, with two die cracks
arcing through and below UNIT and the fraction. The date and
legends are complete and strong, and all 3 of the die-cutter
errors are obvious.
Our grade is VF30 sharpness net F15.

1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse VG8
. Slightly sharper but
there is a cut on the rim over AT in STATES and a smaller one
under the fraction, but neither one reaches inside the dentils. In
addition there are faint hairline scratches on the portrait and a
couple very shallow pit marks in the field before the face while
the remainder of the planchet is smooth. Glossy medium choco-
late brown with traces of lighter brown in protected areas on
the reverse. EDS-MDS, Breen state II. There are dull die clash-
marks through ERTY but no die cracks on the reverse. All 3 of
the die-cutter errors are clear (missing left stem, 000 denomi-
nator, and U over Inverted U in UNITED). A decent example for
the grade.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP
