1803 S-258 R1 Small Date, Large Fraction F15
. Attractive
glossy medium chocolate brown. No notable defects but there is
some loose dirt caked into the most-protected areas on the
reverse. A tiny planchet chip low on the neck is the best identi-
fying mark. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack arcing from
the rim up through the 1 and lower curls to the rim left of the
hair ribbon.

1803 S-259 R4 Small Date, Large Fraction F12
. Glossy
light to medium chocolate brown with some lighter brown ton-
ing in protected areas. Smooth surfaces, free of any trace of
corrosion or verdigris. Just minor contact marks, none notable,
plus a small planchet flake on the rim over the Y in LIBERTY.
EDS, Breen state I, with a very light die crack h the top of
STATE. A nice example of this tough variety.

1803 S-260 R1 Small Date, Large Fraction F15
. Sharpness
VF25 but there are traces of extremely fine roughness on both
sides plus some verdigris caked around the wreath ribbon and
fraction. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel
brown toning on the highpoints thanks to a very light cleaning.
Sharply struck EDS.

1803 S-260 R1 Small Date, Large Fraction VG10
. A few
points sharper but there are several rim nicks at the bust, and a
couple of those are obvious. Otherwise just minor contact
marks and no corrosion. Glossy medium to dark chocolate
brown with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. MDS.

1803 S-261 R2 Small Date, Large Fraction VG10
. Sharp-
ness VF20 but the planchet is covered with fine granularity that
dulls the natural gloss. There are a couple fine scratches hidden
in the toning left of the L in LIBERTY, a tiny speck of raised ver-
digris in the field off the chin, plus a couple light scratches over
CENT and a few more through the denominator. Dark olive
brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning covering the
devices. Looks nicer than it might sound. M-LDS, Breen state IV.
A die crack reaches from the dentils between the 8 & 0 in the
date arcing through the curls and hair ribbon to the rim.

Slightly sharper but there are a few dozen small pits scat-
tered over the obverse. No verdigris but the remainder of
the planchet is covered with microscopic granularity under
attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel toning.
The only contact marks are a scuff of shallow scratches
from the rim at the top of the obverse down into the hair
where they fade away. The date is complete and easily
readable although the 3 is weak. The rim is wearing into
the legend on the reverse and the denominator of the frac-
tion is gone, but the numerator is still visible. LDS, Breen
state III, with a raised retained cud break obliterating STA.
An easily attributable example of this very tough "Redbook"
variety.

1803 S-265 R4 Large Date & Fraction G6
. Sharpness VG10
but dark and lightly corroded. No verdigris. The only marks are
a strong nick or shallow cut on the rim behind the head and a
scuff of faint scratches on STATES. Slightly glossy very dark
steel and olive brown. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a fine die
crack from the D in UNITED arcing through the wreath to the E
in STATES. The date and legends are strong.
