1802 S-230 R1 F15
. Sharpness VF35 with uniform very fine
granularity under rather glossy chocolate and olive brown ton-
ing. No marks or verdigris, and the eye appeal is quite nice in
spite of the microscopic roughness. EDS.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

1802 S-231 R1 Stemless Wreath VF30
. Five points sharper
but there is a small splash of reddish chocolate toning on the
numerator and left end of the wreath ribbon. Otherwise the
toning is a very attractive glossy medium brown and light choc-
olate. A thin nick across the base of the 2 is the only notable
contact mark. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with a series of die
cracks at RTY and in the field before the portrait. The Stemless
Wreath feature is bold.

1802 S-232 R1 F12
. Sharpness EF40 but the upper part of
the obverse is covered with fine roughness mixed with traces of
lacquer, and there is microscopic pitting around UN in UNITED.
The remainder of the planchet is smooth and most of the
reverse is choice. Partly glossy medium brown and darker choc-
olate. MDS, Breen state IV. The die clashmarks on the reverse
are clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

1802 S-236 R1 VF20+
. Ten points sharper but there are
some contact marks on otherwise smooth, choice surfaces.
Most of the contact marks are rim bruises, strongest at the
lower curls. The only marks other than the half dozen rim
bruises are a small dig in the dentils under the 0 in the date and
an even smaller one in the field near the dentils over the bust
tip. Attractive glossy light olive and medium chocolate brown.
MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks and clashmarks but no
cud. Curiously a small "12" has been inconspicuously punched
into the edge under the date, and S-236 is the 12th variety in
the Doughty sequence of 1802 varieties (D-175). Can't be a
coincidence.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP

1802 S-237 R2 EF45
. Glossy medium chocolate brown with
subtle overtones of light bluish steel in the fields and protected
areas. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective and this cent
offers outstanding eye appeal. A light diagonal scratch left of
the eye visible only under magnification and a very light rim
bruise over the M in AMERICA are the only notable marks.
Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack arc-
ing from the dentils through the N in UNITED and the wreath to
the ribbon bow and another from the dentils through the M to
the leaf below. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-3 while
the reverse is nearly centered on the planchet.

1802 S-239 R3 PCGS graded VF30
. Glossy light to medium
chocolate brown with areas of darker chocolate toning on both
sides, mostly on the reverse. No roughness or verdigris. The
only marks are some fine scratches on the upper part of the
reverse, mostly in the field at D-S and at ES-OF-A. LDS, Breen
state V. There are strong die cracks along the profile into the
field, and the field between two of these cracks is clearly raised
as a retained cud. A neat die state.
Our grade is VF35 sharp-
ness net VF25+.
The attribution and Ellsworth provenance
are shown on the PCGS label.

1802 S-240 R3 VF25
. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with
a spot of reddish chocolate brown toning in the hair under the
ribbon. No corrosion or verdigris, only minor contact marks. The
only notable mark is a dull nick on the rim over the second T in
STATES. LDS, Breen state IV. The die crack up from the bust
reaches the rim before the face and strong die clashmarks are
visible along the dentils before the portrait with additional clash-
marks at ERICA. Noyes graded VF25 net VF20 and tied for
CC#11, his photo #39422. A nice example of this tough variety.
