1803 S-261 R2 Small Date, Large Fraction EF40
. Glossy
steel brown and chocolate with traces of frosty tan faded down
from mint color along the profile of Ms Liberty. The reverse has
overtones of darker steel.
Sharpness EF45+
but there are a
few small spots of very shallow roughness at TAT in STATES and
a few more at the T in CENT through the wreath to RIC in
AMERICA. No verdigris. The only notable contact mark is a very
thin nick or planchet crease tucked between the bottom of the
bust tip and the dentils below. LDS, Breen state VI. The die
clashmarks are clear, the die crack that arcs up through the
shoulder and lower curls is strong, and the area at the lowest
curl is swollen causing obvious weakness at the opposing area
at TAT. A very nice example of the late die state, and this one is
about the latest seen.

there are some contact marks scattered over the obverse and
extremely fine granularity in the fields on the reverse. The nota-
ble marks are 5 dull pinpricks around the 810 in the date and
some old horizontal pin scratches in the hair over BERT. Mostly
glossy olive brown and steel with a small area of reddish brown
toning at the bottom of the neck. MDS, Breen state II, with die
clashmarks on the obverse and a die flaw in the dentils at stars
4-7. There is a strong double profile along the front edge of the
neck and weaker doubling along the bottom of the jaw (from
die bounce).

1819 N-8 R1 Small Date MS60+
. Lustrous medium steel
brown with about 20% of the mint red remaining visible on
both sides. Would deserve a choice rating except for a stain of
dark toning at F-AM. Sharply struck EDS. Most likely from the
famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents that was brought to
light a few years after the end of the US Civil War. Comes with a
nice provenance.
