1847 N-6 R1 NGC graded MS65 Brown
. Frosty light bluish
steel and olive. The surfaces are lustrous and this cent offers
excellent eye appeal. The only notable mark is a streak of
slightly darker toning from the dentils through star 9 into the
hair bun. MDS, die state b. The die line from the dentils right of
star 6 is sharp but the fine repunching left of the base of the 4
is gone.
Our grade is MS60,
tied for CC#9 in the Grellman
census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
Pop 2; 1
finer in 66.

1847 N-35 R3+ PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown
. Lus-
trous light steel brown with nearly a third of the mint color
remaining, mostly on the obverse. The surfaces are covered
with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is excellent. The only
marks are a few small spots of darker steel toning, the largest
of these at the dentils left of the 1 in the date. E-MDS, die state
b, with fine die cracks at UNITED and ST but without a die crack
through the base of the date. The central devices on both sides
are softly struck as often seen on this variety.
Our grade is net

is noted on the PCGS label.

1848 N-32 R5 VF20
. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown.
The surfaces are smooth and attractive, but there are traces of
extremely faint roughness in a few places on the obverse rim.
No verdigris, only a few minor contact marks. A tiny planchet
chip off the upper right point of star 1 (as struck) can help iden-
tify this cent. EDS. The die cracks on the reverse are present
but light and fine parallel die lines show from the dentils at stars
11-13. A nice example of this tough die variety. Tied for CC#5
honors in the Grellman census.

1848 N-33 R5- NGC graded MS61 Brown
. Frosty medium
brown and light chocolate. No roughness or verdigris, but there
are some nicks on the obverse, mainly on the jaw, neck, and
bust tip. None of the marks is distracting but there are a few too
many to ignore at this sharpness level. A dull diagonal nick on
the jaw over the throat and two ticks on the bust tip are good
identifying marks. Sharply struck EDS. The die lines at the inner
curl are crisp.
Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF35
, tied
for CC#10 in the Grellman census. Comes with a great prove-
nance that includes 3 individuals who completed the Sheldon
series of large cents, a very exclusive club indeed. The attribu-
tion and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label.
