680

Quartet of Early Cents, 1798-1810, grading G-VG

.

Includes one each 1798, 1802, 1803, and 1810. The 1798 is

counterstamped with a large "JC" inside a serrated rectangle

(looks quite old), and the 1810 has a clipped planchet. All have

a clear date. Lot of 4 coins.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $100 - UP

681

1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded G6

. Slightly glossy olive brown

and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The

surfaces are mostly smooth but there are a few marks, includ-

ing a couple planchet flakes or pits in the field at the end of the

lower curls and small nicks scattered over both sides. The date

is easily readable and the legends are complete although a few

elements are weak. MDS, Breen state IV, with crumbling in the

dentils at F-AM.

Our grade is net G5.

Estimated Value .................................................. $2,000 - UP

683

1800/79 S-196 R1 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair

G4

. Rather glossy dark steel and olive brown. The devices are

smooth but very fine granularity shows in the fields and pro-

tected areas. No verdigris or notable marks, just worn. The date

and legends are easily readable and the overdate feature is

clear even though the rim is starting to wear into the bottom of

the date. MDS.

Estimated Value .......................................................$40 - UP

Ex Rod Burress 8/2006.

1800/79 S-196 R1 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair

VF35

. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with

frosty lighter brown in protected areas and darker steel brown

on the highpoints. No roughness or verdigris and only a few

trivial contact marks. A faint vertical hairline left of the eye and

a thin diagonal nick in the field over the end of the bust are

good identifying marks. MDS, Breen state II. The dies are

clashed but the obverse is uncracked. A very nice example of

this popular overdate variety, and the overdate feature is bold.

Estimated Value .................................................. $1,500 - UP

1801 NC-3 R6 Error Denominator 1/000 G4

. Sharpness

VF20 or slightly better but corroded and smoothed to minimize

the roughness. No verdigris and the only notable marks are

some horizontal scratches around the date. The date is strong

and the legends are clear. Glossy dark chocolate brown and

steel. Far from perfect but most of the 22 known examples

come with significant surface problems.

The finest known to

us grades only VG8

. This piece is clearly sharper than the

Breen plate coin for the variety.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $500 - UP

Ex Henry T. Hettger-2016 EAC Sale, lot 260 (lot ticket included).

686

1803 S-252 R2 Small Date & Fraction PCGS graded

XF40,

CAC APPROVED

. Rather glossy medium steel and

chocolate brown. There are some small nicks scattered over the

obverse and a swipe of darker olive brown toning in the curl at

the shoulder, but the eye appeal is nice. EDS, Breen state I,

before any die cracks on the obverse.

Our grade is net VF25

.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $500 - UP

687

1803 S-255 R1 Small Date & Fraction EF40

. Sharpness

AU50 but the toning is a bit darker than normal and there are

microscopic specks of extremely fine verdigris hidden under the

toning. Frosty medium to dark olive brown. The only marks are

a dull nick on the lower part of the neck near the bust and a

couple other signs of light contact at OF on the reverse. None of

the marks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excel-

lent. LDS, Breen state IV, with a cud break at STA. The cud

break is complete, not retained as sometimes found on this

variety.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $600 - UP

Ex Dennis Coffey-Tom Reynolds 1/18/1990-Del Bland (comes

with the Bland collection envelope).
