1794 S-36 R5 VG10
. Sharpness VF25 but covered with uni-
form very fine roughness under glossy dark chocolate brown
and olive toning. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel
brown. No verdigris and just a few trivial marks. The only nota-
ble marks are light diagonal nick in the field under the end of
the chin, a microscopic pit hidden in the hair below the ear lobe,
and another nestled between the upper part of the cap and the
dentils. The marks are not distracting but they offer an easy
way to identify this cent. The date and legends are complete
and easily readable, and the "single berry left of bow" feature is
obvious. A decent example of this very tough die variety.

1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap ANACS graded F15
. Partly
glossy dark olive brown and chocolate with slightly lighter choc-
olate brown and steel toning on the devices. The surfaces are
decent but not perfectly smooth. No verdigris, and the only
notable marks are a minor rim bruise under the 9 and a pair of
small pits at the E in STATES. The date is bold and the legends
are complete except for the usual weakness on ONE CENT. EDS,
Breen state I, before any die failures on the obverse.
Our
grade is VG10 sharpness net VG8.
The attribution is noted
on the ANACS label.
Estimated Value ..................................................... $600 - UP

1796 S-97 R3 Draped Bust G6
. Sharpness F12 or better but
parts of the date have been skillfully strengthened and the
obverse has been lightly smoothed to minimize minor rough-
ness and a few small pits. Slightly glossy steel brown and choc-
olate. The legends are complete and strong. EDS, prior to any
die cracks. Looks better than it might sound.
Estimated Value ..................................................... $150 - UP

1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1795 PCGS
graded G6
. Mostly glossy light to medium chocolate brown
blending to darker chocolate in protected areas. The surfaces
are mostly smooth but there is some very fine roughness in pro-
tected areas on the reverse. No verdigris, and the notable
marks are a shallow pit at the bottom of the 9, a nick on the
bottom of the eye, and a collection of diagonal nicks at the left
top of the O in ONE. The date is strong and the legends are
clear. LDS, Breen state III, with die cracks from the dentils to
the Y in LIBERTY and first A in AMERICA.
Our grade is G6
,
same as the PCGS grade.
Estimated Value ..................................................... $200 - UP

1797 S-126 R3 NGC graded F15
. Rather glossy dark olive
brown and steel with a hint of reddish steel in protected areas
on the reverse. No corrosion or verdigris, only small contact
marks consistent with the grade. A thin horizontal nick and tiny
planchet chip in the hair left of the ear lobe are the best identi-
fying marks. M-LDS, Breen state V, with strong die cracks on the
obverse. The date is bold and the legends are clear. A decent
lower grade cent, and it comes with a nice provenance.
Our
grade is VG10
. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath F12
. The obverse is very
attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown and olive; the
reverse is slightly glossy darker chocolate brown and olive with
lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The obverse is
smooth except for microscopic roughness near the dentils at
LIBERTY clockwise to the dentils opposite the chin while micro-
scopic roughness covers the reverse. No verdigris, and the only
notable mark is a dull, shallow nick on the neck. M-LDS, Breen
state IV, with a radial die crack from the dentils to the neck near
the bust. The strike is a bit weak at the bust tip and the oppos-
ing area at OF, which is typical for the later states of this variety.
The obverse grades
VF20
or slightly better while the reverse
nets to
VG8
, so the
F12
assessment is a compromise. Still a
decent example of this tough Stemless Wreath variety, near the
lower end of the condition census.
