Large Cents

1797 S-136 R3 VF25
. Slightly sharper but there is a chip out
of the rim under the second 7 in the date, a fine diagonal hair-
line scratch under the earlobe, a vertical nick at the curl on the
neck, and a dull nick near the dentils off the end of the nose.
None of these marks is especially distracting and the overall eye
appeal of this cent is excellent. Glossy medium chocolate brown
with lighter brown toning on the devices. LDS, Breen state V.
The reverse die is blunted, as usual on this variety, and there is
a die crack from the rim through the left side of the U in
UNITED in addition to the earlier cracks. Comes with a nice
provenance.

M-LDS, Breen state IV, with two die cracks from the lower curls
to the dentils and a buckle in the field at the upper crack.
Comes with a nice provenance.

except for weakness on the denominator. LDS, Breen state V.

1798 S-181 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 F12
. Variety with a
stray 8 hidden in the drapery and large 0' s over small 0' s in the
denominator. A few points sharper but there are shallow contact
marks scattered over both sides, including light scratches on the
obverse, mostly in the field before the portrait. All the marks are
covered by attractive glossy medium to dark chocolate brown
and olive toning and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the
grade. LDS, Breen state IV. There are clear die cracks on the
obverse and a slightly raised retained cud break affects the bust
tip. The bottom of the stray 8 is clearly visible in the drapery
folds over the right edge of the normal 8, and the large 0' s over
small 0' s feature in the denominator is obvious on the second
0. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the
reverse is rotated 40 degrees CCW. Comes with a nice prove-
nance.
