1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Small Planchet

Noe-30 R3 NGC graded VF30

. A Small Planchet type with

MASSACHUSETTS. Glossy medium gray and steel with lighter

steel gray toning on the devices. Smooth and free of contact

marks but the strike is uneven with obvious weakness at K-12 to

K-3 on the obverse and K-9 to K-12 on the reverse. Everything

else is nicely impressed. The Pine Tree, date, and denomination

are all bold. Struck with the obverse slightly off center to the

top and the reverse off a bit to the bottom. Listed on page 41 in

the "Redbook." Weight shown as 70.4 grains on the NGC label.

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 R5

NGC graded MS63

. Type with pellets on either side of the

tree trunk. Attractive frosty bluish steel gray and toned sil-

ver with hints of mint luster showing in the fields on both

sides. No contact marks but there is a minor stain of slightly

darker toning near the rim over the Pine Tree. Boldly struck

everywhere except for the area left of the tree and the

opposing area right of the date, apparently due to the plan-

chet being a bit thinner in that area. The obverse is mis-

aligned to K-12, as always on this variety, but the reverse is

nicely centered on the planchet. A great example of this

tough denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook."

Weight shown as 35.2 grains on the NGC label.

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 R5

PCGS graded AU53

. Type with pellets on either side of

the tree trunk. Glossy dark gunmetal blue in the fields and

protected areas with lighter grayish silver toning covering

the devices. The contrast accents the details and the eye

appeal of this piece is excellent. No defects, just a touch of

friction on the highpoints from mint state. The strike is

even and strong, but the obverse is misaligned to the top,

as always on this variety. The tiny pellets on either side of

the trunk are clearly visible. A very nice example of this

tough denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook."

Estimated Value ............................................ $5,000 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 R5

PCGS graded AU50

. Type with pellets on either side of

the tree trunk. Glossy bright silver on the devices thanks to

a light cleaning and darker grayish steel in the fields and

protected areas. The only notable marks are a small scratch

or planchet flaw under the V in the denomination and a

nick on the upper part of the E in NEW, and neither mark is

visible to the unaided eye. Strongly struck with bold details

throughout and just a touch of wear on the highpoints. The

obverse is misaligned only slightly to the top, much better

than most of this variety, and the reverse is almost perfectly

centered on the planchet. The tiny pellets on either side of

the tree trunk are clear. A premium example of the denom-

ination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook."

Estimated Value ............................................$5,000 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 R5

PCGS graded VF30

. Type with pellets on either side of the

tree trunk. Glossy medium grayish steel with slightly darker ton-

ing in protected areas. No marks or planchet defects, just lightly

worn. The Pine Tree, date, denomination, and pellets beside the

tree trunk are all strong. Struck with the obverse die only

slightly misaligned to the top of the planchet, clearly better than

most of the variety, while the reverse is off center slightly to the

bottom. A well-balanced yet relatively affordable example of

this tough denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook."

Weight shown as 33.5 grains on the PCGS label.

Estimated Value ...................................................$2,000 - UP

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Threepence Noe-34 R4

PCGS graded VF35

. Type with pellets on either side of the

tree trunk. Glossy medium brownish gray and steel with slightly

lighter toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are smooth and

the only notable mark is a tiny dent at the rim left of the date.

The tiny Pine Tree, date, denomination, and pellets at the tree

trunk are all strong. Struck with the obverse slightly misaligned

to K-11 while the reverse is off a bit to K-7. A nice example of

this scarce denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook."

Estimated Value ...................................................$2,000 - UP
