1850 N-24 R4+ AU50

. Very attractive frosty light to medium

brown. Mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and

this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. No spots or stains, only

a few trivial marks. A tiny nick on the center of the front edge of

the neck and some weakness in the dentils over the first S in

STATES (as struck) can help identify this cent. MDS. Tied for

CC#4 honors for the variety in the Grellman census.

Removed

from an NGC slab graded MS63BN

(NGC label #1780681-

001 included).

Estimated Value .....................................................$600 - UP

Discovered unattributed by Dave Stark.

1851 N-35 R5+ NGC graded AU55

. Glossy medium brown

and light chocolate blending to medium chocolate brown in pro-

tected areas. The surfaces are smooth but there is a speck of

crud under star 12 and a larger splash of darker olive crud on

the leaves under OF. A dull circular nick or planchet flake

between stars 12 & 13 can help identify this cent. EDS. The fine

die lines in the fields on the reverse are present and there are

no visible rim breaks. This is the discovery coin for the die vari-

ety, that being accomplished when Jules Reiver owned the coin.

Our grade is VF30 net VF25+

and tied for CC#12 in the

Grellman census. The attribution and Reiver provenance are

noted on the NGC label.

Pop 1; none finer at NGC for the

variety.

1851 N-40 R5 AU50

. Frosty medium steel brown and light

chocolate with hints of underlying very faded mint color show-

ing through in a few places on both sides. There is virtually no

wear at all on this cent but both sides show several low spots

where debris came between the dies and the planchet (most

likely grease or oil used to lubricate the press mechanisms).

Most examples of this rare variety come with similar low spots,

but they are especially prevalent on this piece. The coronet at

LIB is significantly blunted by a die clog. The only post-striking

defect worthy of mention is a tiny speck of carbon in the field

off the chin. EDS. CC#5 in the Grellman census.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $350 - UP

Discovered unattributed by Allen Ross.

1852 N-23 R5 PCGS graded XF45

. Attractive glossy medium

brown and light chocolate. Smooth with only minor contact

marks. A light scratch in the field over star 1 and another even

lighter one under star 8 are the only notable marks, and neither

is visible without a glass. M-LDS, die state b, with a rather large

rim cud break at the bottom of the reverse.

Our grade is

VF35 sharpness net VF30.

Not in the overall census for the

variety but tied for CC#8 of those with the single cud break in

the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.

Pop 1; 6 finer at PCGS.
