Session Two - Monday, February 13, 2017 10:00 am PST

721

1853 N-28 R3+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown

. Lustrous

medium steel brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel and

peeps of faded mint red on the reverse. There is a small spot of

darker steel toning over star 11 and a thin struck-through line

between stars 4 & 5. LDS, die state c. All the die lines of the

earlier states are gone, the fields are heavily flowlined, and the

top of the 8 is weak and blurry.

Our grade is MS60

, tied for

CC#8 in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance

that includes two fellows who completed the Sheldon die variety

series of early date cents (Brown did it twice!).

Pop 2; 4 finer,

2 in 64, 2 in 65.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $500 - UP

1854 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown

. Frosty medium

steel brown and light olive with a subtle hint of light bluish steel

overtone. About 5% of the original mint red remains visible on

both sides and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No spots,

stains, or significant contact marks, but there is a hint of rub on

the highest points of the devices. A microscopic pinprick under

the lowest point of star 12 and a tiny tick on the lower right part

of the O in ONE can help identify this cent, but they are barely

visible with a glass. M-LDS, die state c, with die clashmarks on

both sides and a fine flowline from the left end of the base of

the 1 to the space between two dentils. The stray 1 punched

into the right side of the ear and the top of an 8 in the space

right of the Y in LIBERTY are both easily visible (the so-called

"Dartboard Obverse" variety).

Our grade is AU58.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $300 - UP

1854 N-26 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Brown,

CAC

APPROVED

. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate.

Sharply struck and attractive. The only notable marks are a spot

of slightly darker toning over the left end of the eyebrow and a

speck of carbon hidden between two dentils left of star 3. EDS.

Our grade is MS62. Pop 47; 12 finer, 1 in 65+, 10 in 66,

1 in 67.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $600 - UP

1856 N-3 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown

. Frosty

medium steel brown and light olive with traces of faded mint

red in protected areas, particularly on the obverse. The only

notable marks are some microscopic specks of darker toning

scattered over both sides, none visible without the aid of a

strong glass. Scarce LDS, die state g, with a clearly defined rim

cud from star 12 to star 13.

Our grade is MS60

. Not in the

overall condition census for the die variety but tied for CC#3

honors for the die state in the Grellman census.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $500 - UP

725

1856 N-10 R1 Upright 5 AU58

. Attractive lustrous medium

steel brown and light chocolate with traces of mellowed mint

red showing on both sides. The only marks worthy of mention

are a small horizontal tick on the chin and a vertical nick off the

lower right point of star 8. This cent offers choice mint state eye

appeal but there is a hint of rub on the highest points at the ear.

Nicely struck MDS, die state b. The two die lines from the den-

tils over the R in AMERICA are dull but still visible.

Removed

from an NGC slab graded MS64BN

(NGC label #3313369-

001 included, and it shows the attribution).

Estimated Value ..................................................... $200 - UP

1856 N-12 R1+ Upright 5 AU58

. Glossy medium chocolate

and olive brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas.

Sharply struck and very attractive with just a hint of rub on the

highest points of the devices. There are a few trivial marks,

including a light vertical nick on the jawline just left of the ear

lobe and a tiny diagonal nick on the jaw near the throat. E-MDS,

die state a. Most of the fine die lines of the earliest state are still

visible.

Estimated Value ..................................................... $150 - UP
