1812 S-288 R2 Large Date ANACS graded Unc Details
Reverse Corroded Net EF40
. Lustrous olive and dark bluish
steel. The obverse is choice with outstanding eye appeal but
there is fine roughness along the left edge of the reverse affect-
ing UNITED STAT plus a patch of similar roughness under the
end of the wreath stem. Specks of shallow verdigris are visible
in those roughened areas. Otherwise the reverse is choice as
well. LDS, Breen state III. The legend at the upper part of the
reverse is solidly joined to the rim.
Our grade is MS60 sharp-
ness net EF40
, consistent with the ANACS assessment. The
attribution is noted on the ANACS label.

1812 S-289 R1 Large Date VF25
. Choice glossy medium
chocolate brown with lots of frosty lighter brown in protected
areas, especially on the reverse. Smooth and quite nice for the
grade, void of any notable marks or other defects. MDS with die
clashmarks inside the wreath. In addition stars 1-7 are sharply
doubled as is the truncation of the bust over the first 1, a result
of die bounce. The repunching at the left top of the 2 remains
clear.

1812 S-290 R1 Small Date VF35
. Five points sharper but
there is a small pinprick in the center of the cheek, a light diag-
onal nick right of star 3, and a fine scratch between the date
and star 13. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye appeal
remains outstanding. Frosty medium steel brown and light
chocolate. Flowline luster shows in the protected areas on both
sides. MDS, Breen state II late, with a raised ridge along the top
of STATES OF and dull die clashmarks on both sides.

. Sharpness EF45 but cov-
ered with uniform microscopic granularity on the obverse and
moderate roughness on the reverse. Microscopic specks of
greenish verdigris are scattered over the reverse, but it takes a
glass to see them. No notable contact marks. Slightly glossy
medium to dark chocolate brown. EDS.

1813 S-292 R2 VG7+
. Off Center. Very slightly sharper with
microscopic roughness under rather glossy chocolate brown and
olive toning. No verdigris, only a few minor contact marks. The
notable marks are three nicks that look like incuse dentils on
the unstruck part of the rim behind the head. Struck 10-15% off
center to K-8 leaving the bottom part of the 18, stars 1-5, and
most of UNITED STATES off the planchet. An attractive mint
error in spite of the imperfect surfaces.
