1804 S-266c R2 NGC graded XF45
. Glossy dark choco-
late brown with lighter chocolate brown toning on the
devices. Hints of lighter reddish brown toning in the center
of the reverse testify to an ancient cleaning, but this cent
offers great eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris, only
trivial contact marks. A diagonal nick very well hidden in
the curl left of the date is a good identifying mark, but it is
easy to miss, even with a glass. Sharply struck LDS, Breen
state IV, with bold cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. A pre-
mium example of this popular date.
Our grade is EF40+
sharpness net VF35
. Housed in an older generation NGC
slab.

Sharpness near EF40 with light roughness scattered over both
sides and traces of verdigris caked into protected areas. The
only significant mark is an obvious rim dent over AM in AMER-
ICA. Glossy medium chocolate brown. E-MDS, Breen state II,
with a die crack through the top of MERI but no cud breaks. The
date and legends are complete and clear, although there is crud
caked around the 04.
Our grade is net F12
. The attribution is
noted on the PCGS label.

1804 S-266c R2 VG8
. Sharpness F15 but covered with small
nicks, none notable but far too may to ignore. No corrosion or
verdigris. A dull rim nick over the second T in STATES is a good
identifying mark. Recolored a rather glossy medium chocolate
brown and steel with hints of reddish brown toning in protected
areas. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong cud breaks at RTY and
MERIC. The date and legends are complete and clear.

1804 S-266c R2 AG3
. A couple points sharper but there is a
minor bend in the planchet at the rim under the date. The plan-
chet is covered with fine roughness under rather glossy dark
chocolate brown and steel toning. The date is complete and
easily readable. EDS, prior to any die cracks or cud breaks.

1804 Restrike AU55
. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate
brown. No defects, just a light touch of rub on the highest
points. Late die state with die cracks and obvious die rust, as
usual. These "cents" were struck outside the US Mint in the late
1850' s or early 1860' s by Joseph J. Mickley, who obtained the
dies as scrap metal. The obverse is from the 1803 S-261 variety
with the date altered to 1804, and the reverse is from the 1820
N-12 die variety. Both dies were heavily lapped in an attempt to
minimize the rust that had formed since they were discarded.
These private "Restrikes" have been popular with collectors
since they first appeared for sale in the mid-1860' s and are
listed on page 102 in the "Redbook."
