1803 S-253 R2 VF25

. Sharpness EF45 but there is a deep

scratch or planchet void in the field before the face, a vertical

scratch near the dentils behind the head, and some dull marks

at the Y in LIBERTY. Otherwise the obverse fields appear

smooth but a glass reveals they are covered with microscopic

scratches hidden under glossy greenish olive brown and choco-

late toning. The reverse is choice except for a scratch on the R

in AMERICA. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state IV early, with a

pair of arcing die cracks on the upper left part of the reverse.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $350-UP

236

1803 S-255 R1 VF35

. Glossy light olive and steel brown.

Smooth and sharp, just a few trivial contact marks from choice.

The notable marks are a small nick in the hair near the shoulder

and a thin diagonal nick over the N in ONE. Neither mark is at

all distracting and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. E-MDS,

Breen state I, with die clashmarks behind the head.

crud tucked around many of the devices, especially on the

reverse, and the only notable mark is a nick over the N in ONE.

MDS, Breen state III, with die cracks on both sides.

Estimated Value .......................................................$350-UP

scratches in the field under the hair ribbon, a small rim bruise or

dull rim nick off the lower end of the hair ribbon, and several

short scratches at TE in STATES. Glossy medium chocolate
