1798 S-187 R1 Small 8, Style II Hair VF25

. Sharpness

VF35 but there are myriad microscopic hairline scratches on the

portrait, all hidden in the natural toning and none visible with-

out the aid of a glass, plus a couple light nicks at the top of the

wreath. Frosty uniform chocolate brown and steel. Nicely struck

E-MDS, Breen state II, with two die cracks on the obverse and

one on the reverse but no cud breaks. An attractive cent in spite

of the light marks.

1799 S-189 R2 F15

. Ten points sharper but covered with

minor roughness under glossy medium chocolate brown

and steel toning. No verdigris or significant contact marks.

M-LDS, Breen state V, with a short but clearly visible die

crack from the upper edge of the bust toward the rim and

narrow rim cud breaks at OF-AM. Struck with the dies out

of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly

parallel) and that created a bold impression at the bottom

of the obverse and top of the reverse while leaving LIB-

ERTY and the bottom of the reverse very weak (a striking

variation for the variety discussed by Breen in his large cent

encyclopedia). In addition there seems to have been some

debris, perhaps lubricating grease, on the upper part of the

reverse die that left some minor low spots around the top

of the wreath. Not perfect but still quite nice for a 1799

cent. And the date is as bold as you would see on a cent

with a significantly higher grade.

1799 S-189 R2 PCGS Genuine, Fine Details, Dam-

aged

. Sharpness VF35 but covered with uniform fine to

moderate granularity under rather glossy dark olive brown

and chocolate toning. The highpoints are a lighter shade of

chocolate brown. No verdigris, but there are some old

scratches from the back of the head to the throat and a

small rim bruise under the 79. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with

clearly defined rim cud breaks at F-AM. The 17 is relatively

weak but the rest of the date is clear and the legends are

complete.

Our grade is net VG10

. The attribution is

noted on the PCGS label.

1799 S-189 R2 AG3

. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and

chocolate with lighter brown and chocolate toning on the high-

points. The highpoints are smooth while microscopic roughness

covers the fields and protected areas. No verdigris, and the only

mark is a tiny chip or pit on the bust. The upper two thirds of

the date is clear but the lower third is fading into the rim below.

Nonetheless the date is easily readable and most of the legends

are readable but not strong. A decent lower grade example of

this popular date.

. Sharpness F15 or slightly better but there are two small

patches of fine corrosion at OF-A. Otherwise only minor contact

marks, none significant. Rather glossy medium chocolate brown

and steel. MDS. The date and legends are clear and the over-

date feature is obvious on the 8, faint on the 00.
