Pair of 1798 Cents, both Scarce Varieties
. Includes S-159
R3 Small 8 with Style I Hair Rare LDS (Breen state VII) with a
cud break connecting the L in LIBERTY to the rim above G4+
net AG3 for fine scratches, and S-180 R5+ Small 8 with Style II
Hair EDS before any die cracks or cuds VG10 net G4 for light
granularity. Both have a readable date. Lot of 2 coins.

1798 S-161 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair F12
. Very attractive
glossy medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and
the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade. The only defects
are a few trivial contact marks, the notable ones being a minor
rim bruise left of the lower curls and another over the M in
AMERICA. MDS, Breen state IV, with die cracks on both sides
but no cud breaks.

1798 S-166 R1 Large 8 with Style II Hair VF20
. Five
points sharper with a few small contact marks, mostly on the
obverse. The notable ones are a dull nearly vertical nick in the
field close before the tip of the nose and another on the upper
edge of the bust. No roughness or verdigris, and the toning is
an attractive glossy light chocolate brown and steel. E-MDS,
Breen state III, with two die cracks from the base of the E in
UNITED but without filling between the two cracks. Struck with
the reverse rotated about 30 degrees CCW causing weakness
on the end of the bust.

1798 S-166 R1 Large 8 with Style II Hair F15
. Slightly
sharper but there are a few light contact marks in the field over
the bust and a minor planchet lamination at the M in AMERICA
(as struck). Otherwise this piece is smooth and attractive.
Glossy medium chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning
on the highpoints and lighter chocolate brown in protected
areas. MDS with a strong die crack arcing across the lower left
portion of the reverse.

1798 S-167 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF25
. Sharpness
EF40 but covered with uniform extremely fine granularity that is
offset by attractive mostly glossy dark olive brown and choco-
late toning. No significant verdigris, and the only notable mark
is a tiny planchet chip on the jawline over the throat. Nicely
struck E-MDS, Breen state II. There are tiny die chips at the E in
UNITED but no die cracks on either side. Nice eye appeal in
spite of the imperfect surfaces.

1798 S-169 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair PCGS graded VF20
.
Attractive glossy olive brown with lighter chocolate toning on
the devices. Smooth with only trivial marks, including a slightly
curved nick in the field over the hair ribbon and a dull nick on
the rim over the D in UNITED. MDS, Breen state III, with die
clashmarks on both sides and a small rim cud under the 98. A
nice example of this tough die variety.
