1798 S-171 R4 Small 8, Style II Hair F12
. Sharpness VF20
but covered with fine roughness under mostly glossy medium
olive and steel brown toning. No verdigris or notable contact
marks, but there is an obvious crack in the planchet at the rim
over the L in LIBERTY and the opposing N in UNITED (as
struck). Extremely rare E-MDS, Breen state II, with a slightly
raised retained cud break left of the L in LIBERTY.

1798 S-175 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair VF25
. Sharpness
VF35 but there are areas of light roughness on both sides,
strongest at the E in AMERICA. Most of the planchet is perfectly
smooth and the only significant contact mark is a nick on the
upper half of the L in LIBERTY. Glossy dark olive brown and
steel with lighter reddish chocolate brown toning in protected
areas. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned. LDS, Breen state VI,
with a strong cud break connecting the U in UNITED to the rim.
There is a rather large low spot on the bust (caused by debris
on the die), and the die cracks on the upper half of the reverse
are clear.

1798 S-179 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF35
. Variety with E
over Inverted E in AMERICA. Very attractive glossy light to
medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth, void of any
trace of roughness or verdigris and showing only a few trivial
contact marks. A tiny diagonal nick under the Y in LIBERTY and
a barely visible hairline scratch hidden in the hair over the
shoulder are good identifying marks. Nicely struck E-MDS with a
fine die crack or die line from the right bottom of the I in LIB-
ERTY down to the hair. The E over Inverted E in AMERICA is
obvious. Graded EF40 by Del Bland and Dorothy Paschal.
Comes with a nice provenance.
