1797 S-136 R3 F12

. Sharpness VF30 but covered with fine

granularity under glossy chocolate brown toning. No marks or

verdigris, and the eye appeal of this cent is nice in spite of the

uniformly fine roughness. MDS, Breen state III. The date is bold

and the legends are clear.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $300-UP

1797 S-142 R5+ VG7

. A few points sharper but covered with

light contact marks including small nicks and hairline scratches.

None of the marks is significant in its own right, but there are

far too many to ignore. A nearly vertical nick up from the right

top of the N in ONE is the best identifying mark. Slightly glossy

light to medium chocolate brown. EDS, Breen state I. Struck

slightly off center to K-6 affecting some of the dentils but none

of the devices. The date and legends are complete and easily

readable except for OF, which is weakly struck.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $200-UP

1797 NC-2 R6 G4

. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown

and olive. The surfaces are decent but there is some minor

roughness in the fields and protected areas, mostly behind the

portrait. No verdigris, and the notable marks are a light rim

bruise over the E in UNITED, a diagonal nick on the right side of

the N in ONE, and a small chip or pit well above that N. The

date is bold and the legends are easily readable (although a few

letters are weak). E-MDS, Breen state II, with a rim cud in the

dentils at D-ST. Nice for the grade in spite of the minor imper-

fections.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $600-UP

1798 S-145 R3 Large 8, Style I Hair F12

. A few points

sharper with extremely fine granularity in the fields and pro-

tected areas, but this cent looks choice to the unaided eye. No

verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks, including a tiny

scratch on the neck and a diagonal nick at the bottom of the O

in ONE. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The date is bold and

the legends are strong except for the usual weakness inside the

wreath.

Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP

1798 S-146 R5- Large 8, Style I Hair VG7

. Slightly sharper

but covered with very fine granularity under mostly glossy choc-

olate brown toning. No verdigris, but there are some contact

marks. These include a few faint scratches in the field behind

the head, a collection of small nicks in the field before the neck,

and small rim bruises at the F in OF and CA in AMERICA. MDS.

The date is complete and easily readable but not strong due to

strike weakness at the bust, but everything else is clear.

1798 S-148 R2 Large 8, Style I Hair VG8

. Sharpness F12

but the edge has been carefully and evenly smoothed, appar-

ently to remove a few rim nicks. Otherwise the planchet is

smooth, the eye appeal is excellent, and the only marks are

remnants of a rim nick left of the fraction and a couple dull

nicks right of the D in UNITED. EDS, Breen state II, with a cou-

ple faint die cracks on the obverse. Glossy light to medium

chocolate brown and steel. The date and legends are all strong.
