1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap G6
. Reverse rotated 15 degrees
CW. Slightly glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter steel
brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are decent but a
glass reveals extremely fine granularity in the fields and pro-
tected areas. No verdigris. The notable marks are a small rim
bruise off the end of the bust and two small planchet chips on
the cap. Struck with the reverse rotated 15 degrees CW. The
date is clear and the legends on the reverse are complete
except for a few letters outside the wreath.

1796 S-95 R5+ Draped Bust VG8+
. Sharpness F12 with
some areas displaying the details of a slightly higher grade, but
uniform extremely faint roughness is well hidden under a glossy
patina of chocolate and darker olive and steel brown. No verdi-
gris, and the only marks are a very small rim nick over the right
edge of the first T in STATES and a tiny pinprick hidden inside
the bottom of that E. The date is complete and easily readable
but not strong while the legends are clear and relatively strong
except for OF, which is weak. MDS, Breen state I. A decent
example of this tough die variety. Called VF25 net G6 and tied
for CC#15 in the Noyes census, his photo #26027. Looks better
than that. Doug Smith graded it F12+ And it comes with a nice
provenance.

1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust VF35
. Five points sharper
but lightly cleaned long ago, now beautifully retoned glossy
light to medium chocolate brown. Smooth and very attrac-
tive, void of any defects other than some microscopic plan-
chet chips under the date, a very fine horizontal planchet
void in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon, and a
flake on the upper part of the F in OF (all as struck). MDS,
Breen state II, showing die clashmarks on both sides.
Called EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes cen-
sus, his photo #32076. Bland says EF40 net VF25 and
CC#4 in his census. Both assessments were made before
this cent had retoned completely. The finest known exam-
ple is impounded in the ANS collection, so the pool of really
nice ones is quite limited. A great cent that comes with a
nice provenance.
