1795 S-76a/b R1 Plain Edge but Thick Planchet VG10
.
Sharpness VF25 but dark and covered with fine to moderate
roughness. No notable verdigris, only small contact marks. The
notable marks are a rim nick over the E in LIBERTY and a short
scratch in the field under the cap. Rather glossy dark olive
brown with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. EDS. Struck
on a heavy planchet that weighs 204.0 grains, closer to the
thick planchet standard of 208.0 grains rather than the thin
planchet standard of 168.0 grains. Apparently this was a thick
planchet that did not receive the edge lettering prior to being
struck. An interesting piece and quite rare.

1795 S-77 R3 Plain Edge F12
. Slightly sharper but there are
a few rim bruises on each side, the notable ones being over the
R in LIBERTY and the first S in STATES. Otherwise there are
only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The sur-
faces are smooth, free of corrosion or verdigris. Glossy olive
brown with lighter brown toning on the highpoints. LDS Breen
state V, with die cracks on the reverse and obvious swelling at
MER in AMERICA. The date is bold. Struck on a slightly over-
weight planchet weighing 174.8 grains versus the thin planchet
standard of 168.0 grains.

1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge VG7
. Clipped Planchet. Glossy olive
brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices.
The planchet is mostly smooth but a glass reveals microscopic
granularity in the fields and protected areas. No marks or other
defects. EDS. There is a tiny planchet clip over the N in UNITED.
The date is strong and the legends are readable although some
of the letters outside the wreath are starting to fade into the
rim.

1795 S-80 R5+ "Jefferson Head" Cent PCGS Genu-
ine, Fine Details, Damaged
. Variety with a Plain Edge.
Sharpness near VF20 but damaged. There are more than a
half dozen dull dents, mostly on the obverse, plus a straight
clip out of the planchet at the rim behind the portrait (prob-
ably created post-striking). The strongest dents are in the
center of the reverse, and these created a bulge in the cen-
ter of the obverse. Dark steel brown and chocolate. The
planchet is covered with fine granularity but there is no ver-
digris. Nicely detailed in spite of the obvious damage. The
date is clear except for the bottom of the 7, which is
affected by one of the dents, and the legends are complete.
Even some of the nicer examples of this variety are missing
parts of the legends or design elements due to strike issues
or wear, and problem-free examples are unknown. Seldom
offered in any grade.
Our grade is net AG3
. Listed on
page 99 in the "Redbook." Weight 191.7 grains. The attri-
bution is noted on the PCGS label.
