Large Cents

65

1794 S-24 R1 F12

. The "Apple Cheeks" variety. Sharpness

VF25 but there are two dull and rather obvious old scratches

from the nose and cheek to the hair under the ear plus a shal-

low pitmark near the rim left of the lowest curl. The rest of the

planchet appears smooth but a glass reveals extremely fine

granularity under uniform glossy dark olive brown toning. E-

MDS with no die cracks and just a hint of swelling inside the

wreath. The date and legends are clear.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $500-UP

1794 S-24 R1 G6

. Sharpness F12 or a bit better but burnished

to smooth out minor roughness, and some of the roughness

remains visible in protected areas. No marks or verdigris. Recol-

ored glossy light chocolate brown blending to darker chocolate

in protected areas. The date and legends are complete and eas-

ily readable. MDS with obvious swelling in the center of the

reverse.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $300-UP

1794 S-25 R3 F12+

. Sharpness VF20 but both sides have

been lightly burnished, especially the portrait and obverse

fields. The reason for the burnishing is unclear since there does

not appear to have been any significant roughness on either

side. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a small pinprick

dig just left of the numerator in the fraction. Glossy dark choco-

late brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected

areas on the reverse. MDS showing die clashmarks on the

reverse and a fine double profile from the forehead down to the

lips. Struck with the dies out of proper axial alignment (the die

faces were not perfectly parallel) causing a very strong strike on

the lower part of the obverse and opposing upper part of the

reverse while leaving weakness at ERTY and along the bottom

of the reverse.

1794 S-25 R3 VG7

. Sharpness VG10+, close to F12, but the

surfaces are covered with fine granularity, strongest at STATES.

No verdigris, only light contact marks. The notable marks are a

rim bruise left of the date and another at the first S in STATES.

Slightly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate. The date

and legends are clear except for weakness at OF AMER due to

an uneven strike that is stronger on the left sides, weaker on

the right.

Estimated Value ....................................................... $400-UP

69

1794 S-26 R2 VF20+

. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but

there are tiny pinpricks near the dentils around much of the

obverse plus some more under the eye and on the truncation

over the 9 in the date. No roughness or verdigris, and the ton-

ing is a very attractive glossy medium brown and light choco-

late. LDS, Breen state VII, with two strong die cracks on the

reverse in addition to crisp die clashmarks. An attractive cent,

quite choice except for those tiny pinpricks.

Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

1794 S-26 R2 VG8

. Sharpness VF25 but covered with uniform

microscopic porosity and granularity. No marks or verdigris.

Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel

brown and tan toning on the highpoints. M-LDS, Breen state

VII. The die cracks on the reverse are strong and swelling

weakens the C in CENT. The date and legends are complete and

easily readable.

Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1794 S-28 R2 VG8+

. Slightly sharper but there is a fine

scratch from the hair under the ear to the rim before the throat

and another short vertical scratch just right of the date. The

only other mark is a tiny planchet chip in the field off the end of

the nose. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown and olive. The

surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a glass

reveals extremely faint granularity hidden under the attractive

toning. MDS. The date is strong and the legends are clear

except for weakness at ES-OF.
