1793 C-1 or C-2 R3 Half Cents Liberty Cap facing left

Basal State-1

. A heavily worn piece that is moderately cor-

roded. No verdigris or contact marks, and the toning is a decent

medium chocolate brown blending to olive brown in protected

areas. The reverse is slick but there are enough details remain-

ing on the obverse to say this is definitely a 1793 half cent. The

Liberty Cap facing left is easy to see and faint pieces of the date

and LIBERTY can be made out with some effort. A hole filler for

this tough date.

Group of 11 Early Coppers

. Includes 3 half cents (one each

1794, 1808, & 1826), and 8 large cents (two dated 1794, two

dated 1798, and one each 1803, 1805, 1810, & 1814). Grades

are Fair to VG, average grade AG. Many are sharper with

defects but all have a readable date. Lot of 11 coins.

1804 C-7 R4 Spiked Chin VG7

. Perhaps a point sharper but

there are some light contact marks scattered over both sides

and a rim bruise over the C in AMERICA. No corrosion or verdi-

gris. Slightly glossy medium steel brown with darker steel

brown toning on the highpoints and lighter brown in protected

areas. E-MDS, Manley state 3.0, with fine die cracks on the

reverse but no cud breaks. The date and legends are complete

and clear, and the Spiked Chin feature is weak but visible.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems PCGS graded XF45

.

Glossy olive brown and chocolate mixed with lighter frosty

brown on both sides. No roughness or verdigris, only small con-

tact marks, none notable. EDS, Manley state 1.0. Weakly struck

at UNITED, which is characteristic of the early state, and the

dentils are sharp. This piece was struck twice with an offset of

less than a millimeter between the impressions. Nonetheless,

the doubling is obvious on all the design elements on both

sides, strongest along the profile of Ms Liberty. The "Mint Error"

and "Double Struck in Collar" features are noted on the PCGS

label.

Our grade is VF35.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems VG7

. Glossy medium

steel brown and chocolate blending to darker chocolate brown

in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and attractive for

the grade, a nick near the rim behind the head being the best

identifying mark. This piece was struck twice. One strike was

centered on the planchet but the piece failed to eject before

being struck a second time. The second strike was rotated 30

degrees CW and slightly off center to K-5. The second strike

was against the obverse die on that side leaving obvious

"naked-eye" evidence of the rotated strike on the portrait. The

reverse was struck against a new blank planchet on the second

impression thereby creating an incuse brockage of the reverse

on that planchet and causing characteristic swelling or uneven-

ness on this piece. A neat "double error."

1832 C-3 R2 AU55

. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate

with puffs of olive brown on the obverse. Peeps of faded mint

color show in protected areas on the reverse. No defects, just a

hint of friction on the highest points of the devices. Sharply

struck MDS with the usual die rust on the reverse.

1857 C-1 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown,

APPROVED

. Frosty light olive brown and chocolate with 20%

of the mint color remaining on each side. The only marks, and

they are trivial, are a few tiny ticks in the field off the end of the

chin and a microscopic speck of darker toning nestled between

the lower point of star 10 and the dentils. Nicely struck with

radial lines in all the stars. A very attractive example of this final

year of half cent production.

Our grade is MS63+

. The attri-

bution is noted on the PCGS label.

PCGS population 2; none

finer at PCGS for the variety.
