1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS Genuine, Fine
Details, Damaged
. Sharpness VF20 but there are numer-
ous contact marks scattered over the obverse, including a
half dozen small dents or planchet voids, nicks, and fine
scratches. In addition there is a thin diagonal planchet fis-
sure from just off the tip of the nose down to the field
before the neck. The reverse has only minor contact marks
but there are traces of shallow reddish chocolate brown
scale in protected areas on an otherwise smooth planchet.
Glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. Nicely
struck EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are com-
plete and strong. Not perfect but quite acceptable for this
very popular variety, our first Federal Large Cent.

1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA PCGS Genuine Fine
Details, Damaged
. Sharpness VF25 or better but lightly
burnished and recolored glossy medium chocolate brown
and steel. There are a dozen hair-thin streaks of lighter sil-
very toning on the obverse, and these catch your eye. Per-
haps a more skilled recoloring would eliminate this
problem. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and there are
no notable contact marks. Nicely struck with a strong date
and legends. MDS, Breen state II, with a subtle wave under
the date and no die clashmarks. The date and legends are
all strong.
Our grade is net F15
. The attribution is noted
on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value ............................................ $10,000-UP

1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA PCGS graded VG
Details, Damaged
. Sharpness F15 but covered with
extremely fine granularity under mostly glossy dark olive
brown and steel toning with lighter steel brown and choco-
late toning on the devices. The surfaces have been lightly
smoothed and myriad microscopic hairline scratches left
behind from the smoothing are hidden in the toning. No
verdigris. There are a few rim bumps on the obverse,
including one left of the date and another over the T in LIB-
ERTY, plus a long nick or planchet void under ES in STATES.
EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. The date
and legends are complete and clear.
Our grade is net
VG8
. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.

1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods Fair-2
. A con-
siderably sharper coin, perhaps Fine-12 overall, but it was
plugged through the R in LIBERTY to the opposing second S in
STATES. In addition LIBERTY and the date were reengraved in
letters and numerals that are larger than the original ones seen
on the variety. The planchet is granular or lightly corroded, and
the obverse fields have been scraped to smooth away most of
the roughness. No additional marks or verdigris. Toned an
attractive and slightly glossy medium chocolate and olive
brown.
