1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap VG10

. Sharpness VF20 but cov-

ered with microscopic roughness that is rather well hidden

under glossy dark olive brown and chocolate toning. No verdi-

gris, and the only notable marks are a pinprick or chip high on

the neck, a vertical scratch on the C in CENT, and a small rim

dent right of the fraction. E-MDS, Breen state I, with a diagonal

line of minor swelling through the bottom of the cap. The date

is bold and the legends are strong except for the usual weak-

ness inside the wreath.

1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap VG10

. Sharpness VF25 but cov-

ered with fine roughness under a glossy dark olive brown and

steel patina. There are traces of shallow verdigris in some of the

ONE. EDS. The date is bold and the legends are clear.

1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap VG8

. Glossy medium olive brown

and chocolate. The planchet is mostly smooth but there are a

few small areas of fine roughness, the largest of these at the

dentils over TE in STATES. No verdigris. A rim nick under the 9

in the date is the only notable contact mark. MDS. The date and

legends are strong except for the usual weakness on ONE CENT.

1796 S-81 R3 Liberty Cap VG7+

. The obverse is slightly

sharper than the reverse, which is typical for these Liberty Cap

Cents. Mostly glossy dark chocolate and olive brown with lighter

chocolate brown and steel toning on the devices. Microscopic

granularity covers the fields but there is no verdigris. The only

marks are some microscopic hairline scratches hidden in the

toning on the obverse and a couple very tiny rim bruises over

the E & Y in LIBERTY. The date is bold and the legends are com-

plete.

117

1796 S-84 R3 Liberty Cap VG7

. Attractive glossy medium

chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and the only defects

are a few light rim bruises before the neck and chin. M-LDS with

an obvious bulge at the 6 and at ED-S on the reverse. The 179

are strong while the 6 is weaker but readable due to the swell-

ing, and the legends are readable except for the ED in UNITED.

118

1796 S-86 R5 Liberty Cap VG8

. Sharpness VF20 but the

fields, rims, and much of the portrait have been carefully

smoothed. There is no trace of roughness, so the smoothing

must have been intended to remove some marks or strengthen

the devices. The only notable mark is a thin depression or plan-

chet void along the edge left of the date. Retoned a very attrac-

tive highly glossy chocolate brown. The date and legends are

complete and clear. EDS, Breen state I.

119

1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap VG8

. Sharpness F12 or slightly

better but covered with very shallow roughness on all but the

highpoints, which are smooth. Lightly burnished and retoned

medium chocolate and bluish steel brown. No verdigris, and the

only mark is an old scratch under ERICA. MDS with a fine die

crack from the right top of the 7 into the truncation above and

the usual swelling on the 6. The remainder of the date is strong

and the legends are clear except for strike weakness on OF.

Trio of 1796 Liberty Cap Cents

. Includes S-89 R3 G6 net

AG3 for fine granularity, S-91 R3 Basal State-1, and S-81 or S-

82 with an AG3 obverse but a slick reverse that makes a posi-

tive attribution impossible. All have a readable date. Lot of 3

122

1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap VG8

. Upset Reverse. Glossy

olive brown and steel. No corrosion or verdigris, only a few triv-

ial contact marks. A small diagonal nick in the center of the

cheek and a tiny rim bruise right of the Y in LIBERTY are the

best identifying marks. EDS, Breen state I, with the reverse

rotated 165 degrees CCW, nearly inverted from the normal

head-to-foot orientation. The date is complete and the legends

are easily readable. A decent example of this tough variety.
