1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair G4

. Several points

sharper but covered with very fine roughness, and there are a

couple dozen shallow pits scattered over the reverse. No con-

tact marks, only a few specks of greenish verdigris. Rather

glossy chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning on the

devices. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling at TES-OF-

A. Double struck with a small offset between impressions, per-

haps 1 millimeter at most. The first strike was centered on the

planchet and the second was shifted slightly to K-10.5. The

doubling is visible on both sides, clearest in the dentils and

under the date where the bottom of the first 8 is visible below

the second 8. The date is strong and the legends are clear.

1798/7 S-152 R2 Overdate Large 8 over 7 F12

. Sharpness

VF20 but covered with uniform microscopic granularity under

rather glossy dark olive brown and steel toning. No verdigris,

and the only mark is a tiny chip out of the rim over the R in LIB-

ERTY. LDS. The wave in the field under the hair ribbon is strong.

The date is strong, the overdate feature is obvious to the

unaided eye, and the legends are clear. A decent example of

this popular overdate variety.
