. Lustrous bright original mint red just
starting to fade to light steel brown on the highpoints,
about 70% of the mint color remaining. This cent offers
great eye appeal. The only flaws are a thin, shallow diago-
nal scrape on the cheek and a couple tiny ticks in the hair
over the B in LIBERTY. Otherwise this cent is a gem. EDS,
die state a. Fine die lines are visible at UNITED and ERIC.

PCGS graded MS-66 Brown.
CAC
Approved
. Highly lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with
generous traces of mint red showing on the obverse. This cent
offers great eye appeal. The only marks are a speck of carbon
midway between star 1 and the throat, a couple more at the
dentils near star 2, and a spot of dark toning (not carbon) that
connects star 13 to the adjacent curl. None of these spots is at
all distracting. MDS, die state b. The repunching on the date
that is seen in the early state is gone, the fields are flowlined,
and a die crack connects the bust tip to star 1. This is New-
comb's old #13. Called MS63 and tied for CC#4 honors in the
Noyes census, his photo #55143.
Our grade is MS63
as well,
tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown

PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown.
CAC
Approved
. Lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with 25% of
the original mint color remaining. This cent offers great eye
appeal and it is nearly flawless. The only defects, and they are
trivial, are a few barely visible specks of darker steel toning on
both sides, a very shallow low spot on the neck (caused by
debris on the die), and a light nick in the field just right of the
main curl. MDS, die state b. The delicate repunching on the
date is visible, clearest inside the top of the 8.
Our grade is
MS64.

PCGS graded MS-63 Brown
. Frosty light
chocolate brown and steel with traces of faded mint color
remaining in protected areas on both sides. The notable marks
are a tiny, barely visible scratch at the dentils tips left of star 1,
a very shallow low spot on the neck (caused by debris on the
die), and a small planchet void on the rim over the second S in
STATES (as struck). MDS, die state b, with a die crack that arcs
from the rim at star 3 through the top of the head to the rim at
star 9.
Our grade is MS60
, tied for CC#5 with several others
in the Grellman census. An attractive example for the grade.
