.
PCGS graded
AU-53.
CAC Approved
. Very attractive glossy medium steel
brown and chocolate with frosty lighter steel brown toning in
protected areas on both sides. Essentially flawless displaying
very light wear on the highpoints and no distractions. The only
marks are a thin, barely visible nick on the eyebrow and an
even smaller planchet chip on the forehead, as struck. LDS,
Breen state VI, showing die cracks on both sides. In addition
there is a strong cud break connecting the first T in STATES to
the rim above plus narrow but clearly defined rim cuds at NI
and TED in UNITED. A beautiful cent in a neat die state.
Our
grade is EF40+
. Comes with an outstanding provenance. The
Naftzger collection envelope is included with the lot while the
attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS
label.

1798 S-169 R3 Style II Hair with Small 8 NGC graded XF
Details, Corroded
. Rather glossy dark olive brown and choco-
late with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. Uniform
extremely fine roughness covers both sides but it is effectively
hidden under the attractive toning. The only marks are a small
spot of reddish verdigris over the right top of the U in UNITED
and a thin nick under OF. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with bulges
through the top of LIBERTY extending slightly beyond the Y. A
decent if imperfect example of a variety that's difficult to find in
high grade.

attribution is noted on the NCS label.

1798 S-178 R5+ Style II Hair with Reverse of 1796 Fair-
2
. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and void of any
significant marks, just heavily worn. The date is complete and
easily readable but most of the reverse is worn smooth, per-
haps 10% of the designs remaining visible on that side, clearest
at AMERIC. The "single leaves" feature at the top of the wreath
is faint at best but there is enough detail remaining to easily
attribute the variety.

1798 S-184 R1 Style II Hair with Small 8 PCGS "Genu-
ine" VF Details, Tooled
. Dark olive brown and steel. The sur-
faces are covered with fine to moderate granularity and there
are traces of greenish verdigris on the reverse. Some hairline
scratches are hidden in the toning on the obverse, mostly on
the portrait. MDS. The date and legends are complete and
remain readable in spite of the roughness.

1799 S-189 R2 PCGS "Genuine" Fine Details, Damage
.
Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel blending to darker
olive brown and steel in protected areas. The planchet is mostly
smooth but the left side of the obverse is slightly rough and
there are a half dozen small pits on the reverse, mostly at ED in
UNITED and ON in ONE. No verdigris or notable signs of con-
tact. MDS, Breen state IV, showing narrow rim cud breaks at F-
AM. The date is bold while LIBERTY and the opposing area at
the fraction and UNIT are weakly struck. Breen mentions this is
a result of axial die misalignment in the intermediate die state
(the die faces not in proper parallel alignment). The die chip
(shallow lump) under the E in ONE is visible. Not perfect but still
decent for a 1799 cent, and the bold date is a big plus.

grade is F12 sharpness net VG8.
