1821 N-2 R1
.
NGC graded MS-62 Brown
. Glossy mix
of light brown and darker chocolate. Sharply struck and
attractive but not quite perfect. There is a faint diagonal
planchet void passing through the eye and tiny traces of
extremely fine roughness can be found hidden under the
toning on the obverse. None of these defects are visible to
the unaided eye. MDS. The die line from the bust tip that
shows in the early state is gone but there is no crumbling in
the dentils at stars 6 & 7.
Our grade is AU50 sharpness
net EF45

84
1822 N-13 R5 G6
. Sharpness at least VG10 but covered with
uniform fine to moderate granularity that dulls the surfaces. No
verdigris, and the only notable marks are a couple light
scratches right of star 4 and a small dig under the right arm of
the T in CENT. Medium chocolate brown.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1823/2 N-1 R2 Overdate 3 over 2 F12
. Slightly sharper
with a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade.
None of these marks is distracting and the overall eye appeal of
this cent is decent for the grade. Glossy dark chocolate brown.
Nicely struck E-MDS. The overdate feature is sharp.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

1828 N-11 R2
.
PCGS graded AU-55
. Very attractive glossy
steel brown and chocolate with frosty light steel brown toning in
protected areas on both sides. A choice example, just a few triv-
ial ticks from flawless. E-MDS. The stray S left of the first S in
STATES and stray O left of the O in OF are clear.
Our grade is
EF40 choice
. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1829 N-3 R3 Small Letters Reverse
.
ANACS graded EF-
40
. The obverse is glossy medium brown and light chocolate
while the reverse is frosty chocolate and olive brown with bluish
steel overtones. Both sides display attractive flowline luster in
the protected areas. The only notable defects are a half dozen
light rim bruises on both sides, the strongest of these at star 7.
This cent offers nice eye appeal in spite of the rim marks. MDS.
Our grade is VF30+ net VF25
. The ANACS label incorrectly
identifies this as a Large Letters variety.
Estimated Value .......................................................$350-UP

1829 N-7 R3 VF20
. The "Wheelspoke Reverse" variety. Attrac-
tive glossy light chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attrac-
tive, void of any distracting marks. LDS with 5 strong radial die
cracks from the wreath to the dentils (the 5 "spokes" of the
wheel). A nice example of this tough variety.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP
90
1830 N-6 R4 Small Letters Reverse VF25
. Ten points
sharper but there is a very shallow spot of fine corrosion on the
neck and another smaller one on the bottom of the bust above
the 8. These two spots are not very distracting but they do con-
tain microscopic traces of dark verdigris. The other notable
defects are a scuff of very faint hairlines on the neck, a few tiny
nicks at LIB, a tiny rim nick right of star 13, and a stain of fine
carbon at UNITED STATE. Glossy steel brown and light choco-
late, slightly darker at UNITED STATE due to the carbon dust.
MDS with a fine die crack from the bust tip. This example is
nicely struck, which is quite unusual for the variety. All the stars
show complete radials and there is no notable weakness on the
portrait or wreath. A decent example of this tough "Redbook"
variety.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP
