1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA
.
PCGS graded VF-25
.
Rather glossy chocolate and darker steel brown. Hints of
frosty mint luster can be found in protected areas on the
reverse. No trace of corrosion or verdigris, but there are
some light contact marks. The notable ones are a half
dozen hairline scratches on the obverse, the strongest of
these from the rim right of the Y to the bottom of the eye
into the cheek, a rim bruise under the 1 in the date, and a
half dozen dull ticks under IBER in LIBERTY. The date and
legends are complete and strong and the eye appeal of this
cent is quite nice. M-LDS, Breen state III early. The die
clashmarks at the throat and truncation are sharp. An
attractive mid-grade example of the ever-popular Chain
Cent.

ANACS graded VF-30
. Slightly
glossy dark chocolate brown and olive. The planchet is covered
with uniform very fine roughness but there is no verdigris and
the eye appeal is decent in spite of the imperfect surfaces. The
only mark is a tiny pit at the base of the 7 in the date. Nicely
struck EDS, before any die cracks or clashmarks on either side.
The date and legends are strong.

PCGS graded VF-35
. Slightly glossy dark
olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the
highpoints. The planchet is covered with uniform micro-
scopic granularity on all but the highpoints, which are
smooth. No marks or verdigris, and the eye appeal is
decent. The edge lettering is blundered and reads "ONE
HUNA DOLLAR." The PCGS label properly identifies this as a
"Mint Error" with "Incomplete Edge Detail." A neat cent,
and it comes with an important provenance.
