1800/798 NC-6 R6+ Overdate with Style I Hair Fair-
2+
. Somewhat glossy chocolate and steel brown with
darker olive brown toning in the fields and protected areas.
The surfaces are decent for the grade but not perfectly
smooth, and there are several old, light scratches on both
sides, especially on the reverse. The most notable mark is a
shallow pit or planchet chip under the E in AMERICA. The
date is weak but easily readable and most of the design
elements remain visible in spite of heavy wear. This is a dif-
ficult variety to attribute but there are enough details
remaining on the reverse to differentiate it from the other
dies that were used with this obverse. A total of 17 exam-
ples are known.

1801 S-216 R1 F12
. Glossy olive brown and steel with slightly
lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. No notable rough-
ness or verdigris, only minor contact marks in the field before
the neck. E-MDS, Breen state II. The strike is uneven (which is
mentioned by Breen as a characteristic of the die state) with
obvious weakness at the bust tip and the opposing area at OF-
AME.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

1802 NC-1 R5+ AG3
. Slightly glossy chocolate brown and
steel with slightly lighter brown toning on the highpoints of the
obverse. The devices are smooth but the fields and protected
areas display numerous tiny pits and microscopic granularity. No
verdigris or notable signs of contact. E-MDS, Breen state II. The
die crack from the B in LIBERTY into the hair is visible. The date
is weak but readable and most of the legends are easily read-
able except for UNITED STATES, which are faint.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

Pair of Rare Cents, 1802 & 1827
. Includes 1802 S-241 R1
Stemless Wreath AG3 in the rare terminal die state with two cud
breaks on the reverse (one at ATE in STATES and the other at F
in OF), and an 1827 N-10 R4+ G6 net G4 due to some scratches
around ONE CENT. Both are glossy steel brown and chocolate.
Lot of 2 coins.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1803 S-246 R3 VG10
. Slightly sharper but there is a scratch
between the 1 & 8 in the date, a couple shallow nicks at the 1 in
the denominator of the fraction, and a small rim dent at RI in
AMERICA. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive.
Glossy chocolate brown and olive. EDS, Breen state I, without
the usually seen "Mumps" break at the throat.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

1803 S-263 R3 F15
. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better but
covered with extremely fine roughness under rather glossy dark
chocolate brown and olive toning. No verdigris and only a few
trivial marks. The notable ones are a small planchet flake at the
top of the R in LIBERTY (as struck) and a dull rim nick right of
the second S in STATES. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state VII, with
a cud break connecting the date to the rim below and a strong
die crack arcing across the upper left part of the reverse.
Estimated Value .......................................................$250-UP

PCGS graded
VF-35
. Attractive uniform glossy medium chocolate brown
and steel. The surfaces are smooth, completely void of any
trace of corrosion or verdigris. But there are some light
contact marks. These include a rim bruise left of the date, a
lighter rim bruise left of the fraction, and a small rim nick
right of the date. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I, before
any die cracks or cud breaks.
Our grade is VF20+ sharp-
ness net F15+
. A very nice example of this tough date.
And it comes with an important provenance.
Estimated Value .............................................. $7,000-UP
