1835 C-1 R1
.
PCGS graded MS-63 Red
. Lustrous mint red
mellowing to steel brown with 70% of the red showing on the
obverse, 85% on the reverse. A splash of dark olive toning
mixed with microscopic verdigris at the dentils under the bust
tip and traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the neck
are the only defects on an otherwise gem half cent. LDS, Man-
ley state 2.0, showing strong die clashmarks before the neck
and chin.
Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade.

Brown.
CAC Approved
. Attractive glossy medium choco-
late brown with a faint streak of darker olive brown toning
from star 7 to the rim under star 13. No spots or stains. The
fields are nicely reflective but the mirrors are not deep,
which is normal for the proof strikes of this year. The only
marks are a short hairline scratch on the rim under the 0
and a pair of tiny rim nicks under the adjacent 85. Sharply
struck with minor doubling visible on all 4 digits of the date.
Our grade is Proof-60+
. The attribution is shown on the
PCGS label.

1853 C-1 R1
.
NGC graded MS-66 Brown
. Highly lustrous
light olive and bluish steel brown. Hints of faded mint color
show in a few of the protected areas on both sides. This piece
offers outstanding eye appeal. The only marks, and they are
microscopic, are a few ticks on the cheek and some extremely
tiny specks of darker toning in the right obverse field. MDS. The
obverse fields are just starting to display a hint of waviness.
Our grade is MS63+, very close to MS64
. The attribution is
noted on the NGC label.

is clear.
Our grade is MS63.

NGC graded
Proof 67 Brown
. Very attractive bluish steel and olive
brown with traces of faded mint color on the obverse and
at least 10% of the reverse. No spots or stains, only micro-
scopic hairlines in the fields from perfection. Sharply struck
except for some weakness in the dentils right of the date.
This variety shows strong doubling on CENT and the ribbon
below. Clearly superior to the single example in the fabu-
lous Missouri Cabinet Collection (our sale, 26 January 2014,
lot 224); probably one of the finest known of the variety.
Our grade is Proof-65.
