1831 N-7 R1 Large Letters
.
PCGS graded AU-58
. Choice
glossy steel brown and chocolate with traces of frosty golden
tan faded down from mint color in protected areas on the
obverse. No notable contact marks, but there is a tiny swipe of
darker steel toning at stars 1-2 and along the tops of D-STATE.
MDS. There are fine radial die flowlines off the dentils but the
crumbling has not formed in the notch on the right side of the R
in AMERICA. A fine but clear double profile caused by die
bounce shows on the lips, chin, neck, ERTY, 31 in the date, and
stars 12 & 13. An attractive cent.
Our grade is EF45+
. The
attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1837 N-5 R2 Plain Hair Cord with Small Letters Reverse
.
PCGS graded MS-65 Brown.
CAC Approved

to medium steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and this cent
offers excellent eye appeal. A small group of tiny, light nicks
between star 1 and the neck are good identifying marks. MDS.

1838 N-11/13 R4 EF45
. Attractive glossy medium brown and
light chocolate with frosty lighter brown toning in protected

the rim over star 7. LDS (Newcomb's old #13) with a cud break
extending well inside the dentil tips from star 1 to star 2. In
addition there is another thin rim cud break from star 4 to star
5. A nice example of this very scarce die state.

Red
. Brilliant mint red just starting to mellow to light steel
brown with 90% of the original color remaining. This cent
offers exceptional eye appeal, just a few tiny specks of dark
toning from gem status. The best identifying marks are a
tiny spot resting atop the head under star 7, two more at
the dentils near star 13, and one more between the feet of
the S & T in STATES. Sharply struck (which surprisingly is
not always the case for this proof-only issue). Near the top
of the condition census for the variety and one of the "red-
dest" proof large cents known. A superb date or type coin
for the Petite Head large cent.
Our grade is consistent
with the slab grade
.
