.

only defects are a barely visible planchet lamination at IO in
FUGIO, as struck, and traces of soft verdigris in a few of the
protected areas on both sides. MDS with the bottom of the 8 in
the date filled with crumbling. An acceptable example of the
popular "Club Rays" type. Listed on page 88 in the "Redbook."

.
NGC graded AU-53
.
Struck over a cut-down Talbot Allum & Lee Cent, 1794-1795.
Glossy chocolate brown and steel with smooth, attractive sur-
faces. Very lightly cleaned long ago but the eye appeal is excel-
lent. The only notable defects are a small patch of darker toning
and microscopic roughness above the right top of the N in CENT
and a pinprick on the leaf above the H in HALF. MDS, Manley
state 3.0, with extensive die cracks on the obverse but full leg-
ends on both sides. The date is bold and the 1 above 1 feature
is obvious. Traces of the TAL Cent undertype can be found on
both sides, clearest at the tip of the pole and at the E in AMER-
ICA.
Our grade is EF40 net VF35
. The attribution is noted on
the NGC label.

1804 C-13 R1 Plain 4 without Stems
.
NGC graded
MS-65 Brown
. Frosty steel brown and chocolate. The sur-
faces are slightly dull thanks to a thin layer of natural oxida-
tion, especially on the reverse, but this could be easily
brushed away to bring out the underlying mint luster. The
only marks are a microscopic speck of verdigris inside the
top of the 8 in the date (probably removable), a pair of
faint marks in the field left of the shoulder, and a barely vis-
ible scuff on the chin that does not alter the toning. The
reverse is essentially flawless. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0
early. The dentils on both sides are nearly gone.
Our
grade is MS60+
. A nice example of this popular "Red-
book" variety.
