NGC graded MS-68 Star PL.

Nice rainbow toning on the edges of both sides. A wonder-
ful superb Gem Unc example. The best we have ever seen.
Only 12,000 minted. A breathtakingly beautiful example of
this elusive business strike. Only 12,470 coins were struck
of both Proofs and commercial strikings, with 470 of those
being Proofs. A good fraction of the business strikes were
melted during the difficult years at the close of the Civil War
or in July, 1873 upon the discontinuation of the denomina-
tion. This lovely specimen is richly toned in variegated
shades of gold to golden brown at the extreme edge on
both sides. Thick mint frost radiates from the devices,
prooflike surface elsewhere, and the strike is keen edged
and ideal for one of these elusive silver three cent pieces.
Only a single other MS68 Star graded by NGC.

PCGS graded Proof 67
. Wonderful rainbow ton-
ing. Only 600 minted. A riveting example of this always-
popular Type 3 design (issued from 1859 to 1873). This
sparkling Superb Proof example is well toned and very
carefully struck. Broadly and clearly defined on the legends
and main device, which is unusual, with extra detail at the
star and C III centers. The primary toning hues consist of
blues and golds with some magenta edging in here and
there, much that is iridescent with sparkling color cascades.

PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo
. Light hint of gold
tone. Only 500 minted, very scarce. A sparkling and lustrous
gem Three-cent Nickel, initial year’s mintage, a satiny-cameo
beauty whose fully defined design features gives it a burst
energy. The Proofs are always sharply made; the circulation
strikes this year, rarely so. Collectors prefer a well made 1865
Proof to exhibit the first-year design.
