The Year 1836 in History: The 555-foot marble obelisk known
as the Washington Monument, made of marble, granite, and
bluestone gneiss and weighing 81,120 tons, was designed in
1836 by Robert Mills, a noted government architect who was
also responsible for designing the Treasury, Post Office, and
Patent Office buildings in Washington. The Washington Monu-
ment was unique in its classic simplicity at a time when adorn-
ment was becoming more pronounced. Building it took place in
two major phases, 1848-56, and 1876-84 -- a lack of funds,
political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the Amer-
ican Union caused the intermittent hiatus. It suffered damage in
a 2011 earthquake but will hopefully be reopened in 2014 bar-
ring delays.

1836. Lettered edge. Overton-116, Rarity 2
.
PCGS
graded MS-62.
CAC Approved
. Frosty and mostly untoned.
Star 12 recut on this obverse; the reverse is noteworthy for its
denomination blunder, 50 over 00. The 5 has a broad curved
top and is recut over a 0, the curve of the 0 showing clearly to
left of the 5 and on some specimens it shows between the top
and upper curve of 5.

1836. Lettered edge. Overton-108a, Rarity 2
.
NGC
graded AU-58
. Lightly toned. Very bold strike on stars, portrait
and drapery (including all curls) while the eagle shows similar
outstanding characteristics. All feathers bold, as is the shield.
The eagle’s claws commendably strong as well, with even the
arrow shafts visible in the arrowheads. A remarkable looking
specimen. This is the lettered edge variety in which the date
1836 is overpunched from an earlier "3" so that the 1836
appears to be over 1336. The knob of the 3 clearly shows inside
the lower loop of 8.
Estimated Value ................................................... $500 - 550
