. Rich antique toning on both sides. Third die
marriage with this obverse, with all stars now fairly sharp.
Researchers believe that the previously flat ones may have
been touched up by the die engravers with a better punch or by
graving tools. "In fact," explains Parsley, "this entire obverse
(except date) appears to have been refinished, causing slight
changes in some measurements. A weakness at base of 8 in
[variety] 20-s2 has now progressed to a thin break, with a small
piece completely missing. There is a slight filling from chipping
of the die, at the inside junction of the top and stand of 7."
Unusual to see this amount of die improvement in a working
die, to say the least! A scarce variety. (

. Light even toning. The 1827 half dollars include
two distinct numeral 2 punches. The first and most common is
the square base 2. The second has a curl base. The curl base 2
is used on only two varieties. Typing of 1827-dated half dollars
will challenge the beginning student of the series primarily
because of the large number of varieties available (49). (

. Exhibits a light gray shade on both sides. Nicely
detailed. All original. It is a major event when we see a consign-
ment of uncleaned, naturally toned Bust Halves like the present
group. Bidders with any experience will understand our enthusi-
asm, since most coins that are offered nowadays tend to be
cleaned or recolored. (
