The Year 1832: On Nov. 14, 1832, the first horse-drawn street-
car made its appearance in New York on lower 4th Avenue.
Designed and constructed by John Stephenson, it was called
the "John Mason" and accommodated 30 passengers. The fare
was 12-1/2 cents or the equivalent of one “bit” = one Spanish
silver real or “real de plata”. At the time, Mexican and other
Spanish colonial silver coins circulated widely in the United
States, commingling with their US brethren like this Bust half
dollar.
Later that same year, Dec. 28, Americans witnessed the first
Vice-President to resign. John C. Calhoun did so after being
elected a senator from South Carolina, in order to carry on the
fight for slavery and States'rights. Calhoun never did get along
very well with his superior, President Andrew Jackson.

.
PCGS graded EF-40
. The
obverse exhibits old time toning, while the reverse still has a
hint of luster. On this paring, the obverse has large stars with
broad points ("some looked clipped off" according to Parsley),
and "most are flat." The 18 of the date is a shade wider than
833. "Face has a decidedly pained expression." (We are sure
Liberty won't like hearing that.) On the reverse, the tall 5 has a
long heavy top crossbar and is much higher than 0. Arrowheads
separated. "Nearly all crossbars extend into wing on left and
some on the right." (
