1837. Reeded Edge
.
PCGS graded MS-63
. Lovely gold and
blue toning. A solid Choice MS63 in all regards. The fresh-
appearing surfaces are alight with sizzling luster beneath a
wonderful toning display, the strike is clear-cut at Liberty's hair
curls, cap, clasp, and all but one or two stars; in furtherance of
the sharp bold strike it received, the eagle presents full plum-
age, finely detailed beak and eye, and full claws, with the eye
appeal being nothing short of exceptional.
Half dollars of this design were struck for only a short while, in
1836 and 1837, most of them bearing the 1837 issue date.
Years ago such pieces were ample enough on the market that it
would not be unusual for the writer to see two or three nice
Mint State pieces consigned to a sale, probably equal to what
we would call MS62 and MS63 (the grade offered here) today.
Now with the increased popularity of numismatics and the wide
dispersion of examples, even an Mint State 60 coin is not often
seen. (

1837
.
NGC graded AU-55
. Lovely toning on both sides, well
struck on the hair and cap. The 1837 is one of two date
designed by Christian Gobrecht's for the Reeded Edge, 50
CENTS Reverse half dollar. The elusive 1836, which some con-
sider to be a Pattern issue, directs most attention in the direc-
tion of the much more affordable 1837. This piece has
exceptionally sharp central striking details.
Estimated Value ................................................... $450 - 500
