1832. Small Letters. Overton-117, Rarity 4
.
PCGS
graded VF-25
. The dark toning enhance the contrast between
the devices and the fields on both sides. In earlier Overton edi-
tions, this very scarce 1832 Small Letters variety earned an R-5
rating. However, with the 4th Edition, this has been dropped a
point to a still enviable Rarity-4. Distinguishing features include:
1 over 1 in date with the first 1 struck using a punch that has a
long serif and then repunched with the short blunt bype 1, as
the overlapping serif clearly indicates. Also, traces of this recut-
ting show at the base and along the right hand side. The
obverse is paired with Reverse "D" in which C. is close to the
olive stem. A tall open 5 with straight pointed top is used in the
denomination. There is a small tine at the upper right corner of
the shield. I is centered under T. A defect line traces from the
top left corner of the shield arcing to the center of the shield,
and is visible on well preserved specimens. (
PCGS # 6160
)
Estimated Value ................................................... $400 - 450

1832. Small Letters. Overton-120a, Rarity 3
.
NGC
graded AU-55
. Light golden toning with plenty of mint luster
remaining on both sides. Struck from somewhat worn dies. The
mint kept using dies until well past the time for retiring them,
which often results in poor edge definition and soft stars. A
scarcer variety.
Pop 2; 4 finer for the variety, 2 in 58, 1 in
61, 1 in 67.
Estimated Value ................................................... $400 - 450
