. Lovely rich golden toning.
Strong metal flow augments the already showy mint luster
that covers the Gem quality surfaces, giving the coin a
spanking new, glowing appearance. The mint brilliance is
only broken up by an rare overlay of pale patina. Some of
the obverse stars are pulled toward the edge. All in all a
lustrous Gem. In former days, the luster was sufficient to
establish a coin's status. But today, just as important is the
strike: there is little deviation in the nice relief seen, not
even in the centers of the coin. Only a portion of PLURIBUS
is missing. This part of the reverse design lies opposite the
end of Liberty's bust. During striking, there was insufficient
die pressure to allow metal to flow in both directions into
the descending dies, causing a weak spot on the Latin
motto.

1831 Overton-109, R-1
.
PCGS graded MS-65 PQ
.
Lovely light blue obverse toning. A first-rate gem with richly
permeating luster that flows across the frosty surfaces
unencumbered. Satisfactorily struck for the date, as well,
with only moderate weakness on the stars; about as excel-
lent as the 1831 date is ever found. The coin's designer
would have loved this one! On O-109, the 18 of the date is
higher than 31. There is a small bump in the field 1 mm.
from the inner point of star 5.
