1837 N-3 R1 Plain Hair Cord PCGS graded MS64 Red &

Brown,

CAC APPROVED

. Variety with Medium Letters on

Reverse. Beautiful lustrous mint red mellowing to light olive and

steel brown. Half the original mint color remains on each side.

The only marks are a small, light rim bruise over star 4 and tiny

splashes of slightly darker toning scattered over the reverse.

Sharply struck E-MDS with the usual die cracks on the reverse

(which are present even on the earliest proof strikes) and no die

flowlines. All of the stars show full radial lines and the leaves

display sharp veins. A premium example of the date, type, or

die variety depending on your collecting objective.

1837 N-6 R1 Plain Hair Cord MS60+

. Lustrous light choco-

late and medium steel brown with a few tiny peeps of faded

mint red remaining visible on each side. Satiny mint frost covers

this cent and the eye appeal is excellent. There are a few tiny

wisps of darker olive brown toning on both sides. A small verti-

cal streak of dark olive toning over star 5 and a spot of similar

toning at the top of the first S in STATES are the only notable

marks. MDS.

1837 N-8 R1 Plain Hair Cord AU58

. An attractive frosty mint

state cent that has a few small nicks, including two on the

cheek and one on the rim nick at star 3. Lustrous light to

medium chocolate brown with lighter golden tan in protected

areas. No spots or stains, and the eye appeal is excellent. MDS.

The die lines over ERI in AMERICA are dull but visible.

. Frosty medium steel

brown and light chocolate. Flowline luster covers the protected

areas on both sides. The only notable marks are a dull nick on

the jawline near the earlobe and a spot of fine carbon in the

dentils at star 1. LDS. The extra center dot on the reverse is

gone (the so-called "colon" center dot).

Our grade is AU55

sharpness net AU50 for the spot.

1839/6 N-1 R3 Overdate 9 over 6 NGC graded F15

.

Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter brown ton-

ing on the devices. The two-tone appearance accents the

designs and adds to the eye appeal. The devices are smooth

but the fields show microscopic roughness. Otherwise the only

mark is a tiny, light rim bruise over ER in AMERICA. The over-

date feature is strong.

1839 N-9 R2 Silly Head NGC graded MS64 Brown

. Lus-

trous light to medium steel brown with a few peeps of underly-

ing faded mint color on both sides. Sharply struck and

attractive. The best identifying marks are a puff of darker toning

at the top of the D in UNITED and a sprinkle of reddish brown

toning from the T in CENT to the I in AMERICA. E-MDS. The

bisecting die crack from the dentils over star 5 to the dentils

under star 13 is complete but very light, the die lines off the

upper left point of star 7 are clear, and there are no rim cud

breaks on the obverse.

1839 N-12 R4 Booby Head VF20

. Five points sharper but

there is a scuff of fine vertical scratches hidden in the hair right

of the neck. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and void of any

notable defects. Glossy light olive and chocolate with hints of

reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas. MDS with

a die crack from the rim through star 4 to the nose. A decent

example of this tough die variety.
