flaws at the top of the N in CENT. MDS, die state b, with minor

crumbling tucked under the nose. The repunching on the date

remains visible on all 4 digits. A nice cent.

1843 N-10 R3 MS60

. Frosty light olive and medium steel

brown with faded mint red in protected areas on the

reverse. The only marks are a few minor spots of slightly

darker chocolate brown toning, including one over star 2,

another in the dentils at star 6, plus a small diagonal nick in

the field off the end of the nose. The reverse is choice, the

only mark being a light nick close over the end of the

wreath stem. E-MDS, die state a late. The small point up to

the left from the top of the E in CENT is weak but visible.

Tied for CC#3 honors in the Grellman census.

1844 N-3 R2 MS60

. Beautiful glossy light olive and steel

brown with hints of very faded mint color in a few of the pro-

tected areas. No spots or stains. The only notable marks are a

pair of tiny pinpricks just left of the lowest curl on the neck and

a small nick on the coronet over the left top of the T in LIBERTY.

A smooth, beautiful cent. Unique late die state, between states

d & e, with a strong die crack on the rim outlining where the

terminal cud break (die state e) is about to occur. This die state

was unknown to Grellman when he wrote the 2001 edition of

the reference on the cents of 1840-1857, and this is the only

example known to him today. The hair at the top of the ear is a

bit softly struck, which is normal for this variety, regardless of

the die state. Graded MS63 by Del Bland. A very important cent

to the die state specialist.

. Sharpness near AU50 but cleaned and retoned frosty

uniform reddish steel brown and light chocolate. No spots or

stains only a few minor marks. The notable ones are a thin ver-

tical nick in the center of the cheek and a small rim bruise over

the first T in STATES. E-MDS, die state a, without any cud

breaks on the obverse. Repunching is visible on all 4 digits of

the date and the top of the "Medium 7" is clearly visible over

the normal 7. The always present "moonscape" texture on Ms
