Large Cents

395

1854 N-11 R2 MS60+

. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with

a hint of sea-green in the mix. The satiny mint frost is unbroken

and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal for the grade. A

choice example except for a spot of very fine carbon on the

front edge of the eyeball. This spot is well hidden and is very

easy to overlook, but it counts anyway. MDS, die state b. The

fields are covered with fine roughness from radial die flowlines

caused by die wear. Tied for CC#13 in the Grellman census.

1855 N-7 R1 Upright 55 PCGS graded MS64 Brown

. Lus-

trous light to medium chocolate brown and steel with tiny peeps

of faded mint color showing in protected places on each side.

Satiny and attractive. A speck of darker toning between star 4

and the brow lock and a larger spot of reddish chocolate toning

at the curl on the neck are the only notable marks. M-LDS, die

state c, with fine die cracks on the reverse. A small, very shal-

low low spot (caused by debris on the die) covers the jawline

near the earlobe.

Our grade is MS62.

397

1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown

. Lustrous

light to medium chocolate brown. No spots or stains, and the

best identifying marks are a couple tiny nicks on the bottom of

the O in ONE. EDS+, die state a late. The die lines over UN are

dull but a few are still visible. A shallow low spot surrounds NT

in CENT.

Our grade is MS60

. The PCGS label states this is an

"Upright 5" variety, which is incorrect.

through in a few protected areas. The obverse is flawless but

there are about a dozen small spots of darker olive brown ton-

ing on the reverse, the largest one under the right side of the N

in CENT. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state b early.

1856 N-6 R1 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown,

CAC APPROVED

. Lustrous bright original mint red just starting

to mellow to light steel brown on the highpoints of the devices,

at least 70% of the mint color remaining on each side. No spots

or stains. The only defects are a shallow low spot on the neck

and another inside the wreath (both as struck), plus a small

nick between the right top of the first S in STATES and the den-

tils. E-MDS, die state a. The fine die lines of the earliest state

are still visible and microscopic radial die lines are starting to

form in the fields. A beautiful example of a common die variety.

Our grade is MS64+

. The attribution is noted on the PCGS

label.

PCGS population 3; none finer at PCGS for the vari-

ety.
