1889-CC
.
PCGS graded Fine-12
. Mostly untoned. Popular
CC mint key date, only 350,000 were minted. The Carson Mint
had been shuttered ever since 1885. The Mint reopened un the
summer of 1889, and when Morgan dollar production resumed
in October that year, production totaled 100,000 per month in
October and November, and a final 150,000 pieces coined in
December. According to Rusty Goe in his highly readable and
informative history of the Carson City Mint, "The Mint on Carson
Street", a number of these were later melted: "approximately
250,000 to 325,000 1889-CC silver dollars were eventually
melted, securing this date as one of the keys to the set of Mor-
gan dollars." (

1889-O
.
PCGS graded MS-65
. Lovely blue and golden toning
around the edges. A gem. Crisp satin-like fields careening with
lustrous silver color. The dies left their partly rigid impression
behind with some modest weakness or imprecision only at the
immediate hair curls above the ear. All else is very sharp.

PCGS graded MS-65
. A frosty white coin. The other-
wise satiny silver luster deepens to heavy frostiness in a few
areas on this Gemmy 1890 Silver Dollar. When considering the
amount of die impression this coin received, there are keen-
edged devices throughout, including all hair waves and the
eagle’s feathers.

.
PCGS graded MS-64 Deep Mirror Prooflike.

. Mostly untoned. This issue, sadly, rarely comes
prooflike, since most 1890 Philly mint dollars were struck from
hard-working dies that imparted frostiness but also left lacklus-
ter strike impressions. The present Deep Mirror specimen likely
traces to a newly installed set of dies, although we can never
know for certain. Analysis of the way the Mint utilized its dies
points to this being the case, however. Well worth your consid-
eration.
