. Lovely multicolor toning on both sides. In the half-decade that Morgan silver dollar were struck leading up

to this 1883-S release, the coins that this mint produced were made in sizeable numbers. They remain the foundation of Type collecting, the

mainstay as it were, and even commonly seen 1879-S to 1881-S MS65 specimens draw attention from appreciative collectors and the general

public alike. This changed in 1883 when two Key condition-rarities were inadvertently created, the 1883-S and the 1884-S. Reports are that

the earlier issues had been bagged up and transported from San Francisco to the Treasury in Washington, D.C., where they were probably

vaulted and used as backing for Silver Certificates. Silver dollars coined at this mint beginning in 1883, conversely, which still had large mint-

ages, almost all were fed into circulation. Mint State examples became scarce or even downright rare. Fully Gem Mint State examples 1883-S

          are never offered for sale.

This example is a fresh, beaming gem whose cartwheel luster seems poised to detonate like a Fourth of July fireworks display. Entirely struck

with crisp details on both sides, all hair waves are present. The other design features are similarly bold, just as well defined. The devices show

archetypal San Francisco Mint blazing frost and luster with some bright silver color poking through the naturally toned areas. The fields are

wholly satin-like in their texture, not prooflike, and are typical of the few remaining well made issues from this Mint squirreled away in old-

time estates. This Gem example is squarely in the Condition Census. A coin close to the finest certified by PCGS.

          . White, well struck, and

reflective surfaces. One of the semi-key San Francisco Mint

dates in the series. Morgan dollars always have had a few

sleeper dates. Once, collectors assumed that the mintage

figure told them all they needed to know. And yet several

issues, like this 1883-S were released into circulation where

they circulated widely. Yet on this handsome MS64, the sur-

faces glisten with headlight bright silvery color that may

make your head spin. It is never common to find an ’83-S

struck with exactitude by the dies. This is such a coin.
